SURVEYS - SRC Members, please take some time to fill out the SRC Rotary Club (SRC) Survey President Elect Doug and I sent you last week. Doug and I are highly value your opinion. As our club ages (a sensitive issue with many of us) and as times change, our club may have to be prepared to change. Your response to our survey and your feedback can help us determine how best to gear up for some changes our club may need to stay with the changing times. Our primary objective is to, if necessary, make these changes while staying true to Rotary’s mission of service above self. YOUTH EXCHANGE (YE) - Our SRC’s YE program has gained a, well deserved reputation as the best YE Program in Rotary District 7150 and beyond. Over the past 25 years our SRC has hosted about 90 inbound YE Students and has sent a similar number of outbound students to far away lands. First, I want to salute our inbound and outbound YE Students for making a decision, in their teens, to move to a far away country to become immersed in the country’s culture, customs & language. Skaneateles Resident Sandy Frackenpohl, who has hosted 6 YE Students from Europe and Asia, aptly remarked that” hosting YE Students makes our world smaller.” We’ve heard many moving testimonies from YE outbound students how their children’s year abroad “changed their lives.” So, I want to express my deep appreciation to our SRC Youth Exchange Officer Gard Lorey and his YE Team of Lee Bennett, Karen Price, Lori Ruhlman & Dale Drake for all of the work they do to keep our excellent YE Program running so successfully. I also want to thank our host families for welcoming our YE Students into their homes. NEXT WEEK (April 4) - Mary Giroux will be presiding over our meeting while I am in Virginia. Gahyeon, our YE student from South Korea is going to present her experiences here in Skaneateles over the past seven months.
LAST WEEK... by Mary Giroux
THE BEGINNINGS President Bill opened the meeting by welcoming Marv Langley back from sunny Florida and by congratulating Dave Lee for the beautiful renovation of The Sherwood. Bill also reminded us of the St. Baldrick's fundraiser at Kitty Hoynes raising funds for pediatric cancers and also of the District Conference registration deadline. (see notice below in this newsletter)
THE PROGRAM - Master Series at St. James Church
Bill introduced John Gilly, President of the Skaneateles Sunrise Club and enthusiastic promoter of the Master Series at St. James Church. John brought us up to date on this program which holds panel discussions on various relevant topics, the last being the opioid crises. The programs are designed to strengthen civil discourse through moderated panel discussion. The next program will be held on April 23 at St. James at 7:30 with a 90 minute program and a reception following the program. The topic is "Youth, Sports and Community" which will explore the evolution of sports from self organized to the rigid system of today. Future topics are climate change (October 2019) and affordable healthy eating (April 2020). John answered a number of questions from club members.
50-50 - won by Cathy Powell but the Queen still evades the draw!
Guests - John Gilly, speaker and fellow SSR Rotarian
Attendance - 14 at 27% (52 members)
DID YOU KNOW ?
More people are killed annually by donkeys than die in air crashes.
WHAT's in a WORD? Exquisite - of special or rare beauty. Every day we should hear at least one little song, read one good poem, see one exquisite picture, and if possible, speak a few sensible words. ...... Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, 1749-1832
