LAST MEETING, Oct 3, 2024 …. by Katie Brown
THE BEGINNING: President Ayham led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and welcomed our guests:  Erin McCormack (Skaneateles Library Association Board Vice President), Dave Hempson (Skaneateles Library Association Board President), Mark Dengle (Creamery Board Member), Ian Phillips, Julia Armijo, and Lena.
ANNNOUNCEMENTS:
> Duck Dash Update:  Ayham thanked all the Rotarians for all their help in making this such a succesful event, surpassing the amount of money we made last year. Special shoutouts were given to Dave Lee, Jason Armijo, and the Duck Dash Committee.
> Matthews Walkathon:  Ayham reminded us about our upcoming service project taking place this Saturday morning (10/5) from 8:30 to 10:00. The sign ups so far for this event have been lacking with only 14 walkers signed up (only 7 being Rotarians). It will be a two mile walk with fellow club members to earn donations to the Golisano Children's Hospital.  After the walk, Rotarians can enjoy coffee and pastries at The Sherwood.
> Happy Hour on the Judge:  Ayham talked about the happy hour taking place on October 10th from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. It is the perfect time to bring your loved ones, friends, and of course prospective new Rotary members. The Judge Ben will be leaving the dock at 5:30 pm sharp so make sure you get there on time and please bring a plate or basket of your favorite munchies/appetizers to share. A special thank you to Ed Evans and Mid Lakes Navigation for making this event possible!
> Meeting and Tour on October 17th:  Mary announced our guest speaker at this meeting will be Tom Fernandez of the Woodbine Hospitiality Group. He will be giving an update on the new hotels being built in the Skaneateles area. For anyone who is interested, Tom has arranged a special preview tour of the new hotel being built on Mottville Road. This tour beings at 5:00 pm ahead of the regular scheduled 6:30 pm meeting.
>  Switch of Meeting and No Meeting Date:  Mary announced a change in meeting dates. Due to halloween falling on the fifth Thursday of the month this year, the meeting dates have been switched. There will be a meeting held on October 24th instead of October 31st.  Make sure to mark this change in your calenders.
>  Area 7 District Meeting with Lizzy Martin:  Mary reminded us about the district meeting happening on October 15th from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm at the Borodino Fire Hall (2500 Nunnery Rd Skaneateles). This is an opportunity to meet fellow Rotarians and CNY leaders who are a part of the Auburn, Marcellus, Moravia, Skaneateles, Skaneates Sunrise, and Tully Rotary Clubs.  The first Disrict 7180 President, Lizzy Martin and the local author Shelia Myers will be presenting at this meeting. Please RSVP by October 9 at 8:00 pm using the link sent out in the email from Lizzy Martin. The cost of attendence will be $20 a person and will include apps, dinner, dessert, and beverages. The dress code for this occassion is casual.
>  Annual Flag Fundraiser: Julia Armijo announced the annual flag fundraiser to support the Skaneateles lacrosse team. Please support the lacrosse team and honor our local veterans by buying a flag.
>  Books for the World: If you are available next Wednesday October 9th at 9:30 am, please meet at the Skaneateles High School to help pack boxes of books.
>  New Social Media Account:  Kelly is managing the new Facebook and Instagram accounts. If you have a social media account, please like the Rotary Facebook page and feel free to send Kelly any photos you may have.
>  Get Well Wishes fro Craig Froelich:  Craig had his rotator cuff surgery on Tuesday. Please send him well wishes via text, email, or card.
>  Special Thank you to Ed Evans: Ayham thanked Ed for all his help in setting up the meetings at the American Legion this past summer and for hiring Hans to repair the Rotary podium. Thank you again Ed and Hans!

THE PROGRAM:
Dave and Erin from the Skanateles Library Association gave an informative presentation discussing the vision and depiction for the new library. Erin explained that the vision is to" transfrom the community, fostering connection, learning, and creativity."  In Erin's words, the new library is going to "nurtue the future and honor the past." The current library in town was built in the 1880s and as you can imagine, the town and the people have evolved a lot since then. Due to the evolving needs of the community, Dave and Erin went on to explain that this new library will bring exciting additions that the old library currently does not have such as a cafe, fireplace, wing for children, an events space, and will also be completely ADA accessible. They hope this will be the "3rd gathering space," a place that is appealing to all age groups from young children to seniors. They hope to have enriching workshops, art and craft events, and host performances. The much awaited groundbreaking date will hopefully be set in 2026 and the grand opening potentially in 2027. The new library will sit on 2.14 acres of land nestled in nature off the Skaneateles Creek and will be 16,885 square feet. Dave explained the fundraising as "grass roots" and he looks to the community for financial support! Thanks to Erin and Dave for a very informative evening!
THE ENDING-  Ayham led us in the (Four + one) Five Way Test

Duck Dash
What a splash! This year commenced the 12th annual Duck Dash which took place on Saturday, September 28th. It was a great turnout which included prizes, pizza, and ciders for all ages. Kids were able to enjoy the three buck a duck races which included top prizes such as ice cream gift cards to local places in town and mini golf. The big finale race had 10 winning contestants that took home exciting prizes such as a free two night stay at Hannum House, a free year membership at the Skaneateles Community Center, and a Mirbeau Inn & Spa gift certificate to name just a few. New this year were t-shirts that could be purchased in both children and adult sizes. Don't worry if you missed out on these stylish t-shirts, they can still be purchased from the Chamber of Commerce in town. Thanks again to the Duck Dash committee, Chamber of Commerce, local bussinesses in town, volunteers, and everyone else who made this such a fun and successful fundraising event!
