The ProgramCommunity Services provided by the Salvation Army
James Wanamaker introduced our speaker for the evening, Linda Lopez, Executive Director of Community Services for the Salvation Army.
Linda gave us a brief history of the Salvation Army which was founded in England in the 1800's in response to frustration with the Church's lack of assistance to those in need. In 1865 the Syracuse branch which is the largest in the eastern United States was begun. With an annual budget of $18 million the Salvation Army serves over 40,0000 people in the area each year. Linda spoke about services including daycare services for children, family advocacy services, mental health services, drop in day care for Family Court attendees, emergency services, food services, veteran services, youth services and senior services. A brief video highlighting the new residence for women in need was shown as well as a video of the annual Christmas Distribution which utilizes 1000 volunteers, a massive operation.
Linda expressed the Salvation Army's gratitude to the club for our annual bell ringing and said that there are many ways our club can be involved in helping.
50-50 - Was won by Doug Powell; however, the queen remains hidden in the deck.
Guests - Linda Lopez from the Salvation Army and our good friend and prospective new member Terry McCormack
