PRESIDENT'S CORNER ... by Prez Bill
Greetings Skantarians!  This week PP Bill Conole arranged yet another exceptional speaker for our Club.  CNY Community Foundation Director of Gift Planning Thomas Griffith delivered an excellent presentation regarding how best to donate in a financially efficient manner to local causes.  Thank you, PP Bill!  As I write this I am still thawing out from helping (and later participating in), the Sunrise Club's Winter Fest program.  It was great to see so many of our Club's members out there pitching in as well!  Thank you one and all for your time and service!  As a reminder, there will be a short meeting of the Women's Day event committee after each regular Club meeting to discuss logistics and plan - all are welcome to attend, please contact Amy Tormey for further details and questions.  See you all Thursday!

2017-18: ROTARY THEME: Making a Difference
In 2017-18, we’ll answer the question “What is Rotary?” with RI President-elect Ian H.S. Riseley’s theme, Rotary: Making a Difference. “Whether we’re building a new playground or a new school, improving medical care or sanitation, training conflict mediators or midwives, we know that the work we do will change people’s lives — in ways large and small — for the better.”
LAST WEEK: .... by Bill Conole
Winter Fest - President Bill reminded everyone to pitch in  an help with the Sunrise Club's Winter Fest this weekend.  Joe Benedict, SCHS Interact President asked club members to support his "Polar Plunge" on Saturday, proceeds to support Interact.
Valentine's Dinner - Cheryl Silvestrini announced that the Valentine's Dinner will be held on Thursday, Feb 16th. See additional details below.
Finder's gifts - To Ward's delight, no one claimed to find a handcrafted wine-stopper or pen offer in last week's Skantarian......because there wasn't one!  Offers will be placed sporadically and readership is increasing!  Ward noted the 100th anniversary of Rotary and the 30th anniversary of Polio Plus to which Ward has contributed greatly with his handcrafted wine stopper project.
Food Pantry - President Bill read a thank you note from the Spafford Food Pantry for our $1,162 donation.
Women's Day Celebration - Roberta Williams reported that Kelly Hall designed a website for our club's 2017 International Women's Day event to be held at the Welch Allyn Lodge on March 9th.  See additional details above.
CNY Community Foundation - Tom Griffith, Director of Gift Giving was introduced by Bill Conole.  Tom also served 5 years in the Navy as a nuclear engineer.  Tom explained how the Foundation utilizes charitable contributions to invest and reinvigorate our CNY community.  The Foundation is a tax exempt public charity that helps donors achieve their philanthropic goals.  Funds are professionally managed with the goal of growing endowments over time.  By responsibly stewarding funds and making grants to regional causes the CNY Community Foundation is making a positive difference in CNY.  Tom answered a number of questions from members.
Guests:  Tom Griffith, speaker and Dan Fisher, CNY Community Foundation Board Member
50/50 - Won by Chris Cheney - The elusive Queen of Spades still hides in the dwindling deck.
Attendance - Members attending: 21 at 37 % attendance

DISTRICT ROTARY FOUNDATON CENTENIAL
and POLIO PLU GALA ... by Ward
Bill Conole and Ward Vuillemot attended the Rotary Centennial and Polio Plus Gala event Saturday evening at Yahnundasis Golf Club in New Hartford,  Peace Scholar
Dessa Bergan-Cico spoke of the negative impact of street and gang violence and it negative effect on the education progress of the very young children in the areas of street shootings.  An insightful and eyeing eye opening presentation.
Jan Flood-Nichols, author of “Twin Voices: A memoir of Polio, the Forgotten Killer” was the key note speaker.  Many of you may remember her when she visited Skaneateles SCS and spoke at our club a few years ago.  She was raised in DeWitt, summered on Skaneateles Lake, and  is a Polio survivor, whose twin brother lost his life to Polio in the early 50s, and has spent most of her adult life reminding us of the scourge of the decease and why it MUST be eradicated, and if not, what the consequences will be.
Numerous 2015-16 Rotary Foundation Giving awards were presented to the clubs, along with one to our club for our significant contributions to PolioPlus.  An excellent event with many Rotarians from across our district attending.
BTW, Ward found four Wine-Stopper contributors to his Polio Eradication challenge, topping the final amount at $1,500 going to Rotary Foundation in the contributor’s names since last June.
