Pancake Breakfast 2021 Canceled ... by Lori
As you all likely already know, there will be no Father’s Day Pancake Breakfast this year. The board felt it was just too soon to attempt to serve more than 3,000 people all at once.
We are posting the news of the cancelation and are including a link where people can donate if they’d like to help us fill our coffers so that we can continue to support the community in all the ways we do.  (As you may realize, we will have a deficit without the money the breakfast brings in). We are asking for donations in a quieter way than last year, because we feel we’ve already asked the community for a lot. (The committee is also brainstorming possible fundraisers for later in the year).
We encourage our members to contribute by following the
DONATE link on our webpage at (https://skaneatelesrotary.com/donate). If you are willing to offer friends and relatives the option to donate, that is great.  We will send an email with details and some suggested wording.

LAST WEEK - May 27th, 2021 ... by Mary
Membership/Attendance: 53 Active members with 10 attending.
Guest(s): Dana Hall, President of the Owasco Watershed Lake Association (OWLA).
The Beginnings After the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance President Dave made several announcements:
  • The June 3rd meeting will be at the American Legion
  • Changing of the Guard will take place on June 24th
  • No meeting on July 1st due to holiday
  • Highway cleanup on June 5th and Library book set up on June 2nd- see article above
The Program - Jay introduced Dana Hall, President of OWLA and SLA board member. Dana gave an excellent presentation on the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) and the damage that it is doing to our Hemlocks.  Hemlocks are important to the lakes as their interlocking roots hold soil together which is important in maintaining the gullies and ravines feeding water into the Finger Lakes.  They also shade streams for aquatic life and provide food and cover for wildlife.  HWAs which are as tiny as aphids emerge in the spring and begin their destruction.  The have most likely migrated from the south and have no natural predators.  Cornell has begun to introduce two insect predators but it will take time for them to become established.  In the meantime the application of insecticides is critical to slow the spread.  Dana reported that 2/3's of the inspected areas on Owasco Lake showed signs of infestation.  OWLA has begun a multi year targeted program of spraying and is in need of funds for the project.  A discussion was held exploring the possibility of Rotary grants to help.
Pancake BreakfastLori let us know that publicity would be going out announcing that the pancake breakfast would not be held this year. There will be an on line opportunity for contributions to the club in lieu of the breakfast. (see notice above)
WantedIf you have a favorite inspirational saying please send it to President Dave to be read at a meeting.
The Ending:  Mike Tierney led us in the Four way Test.
