THE PROGRAM
Since it is “President’s Week”, Bill Conole presented a brief presentation on our two local presidents, Millard Fillmore & Grover Cleveland. Millard Fillmore was born in Moravia but moved to New Hope Mills when he was 1 & lived there until he was 16. Millard Fillmore became our 13th president when “Old Rough & Ready” President Zachery Taylor in 1850. Millard was not nominated to run in 1852. He was our last Whig Party President. In 1856 Millard ran on the now infamous “Know Nothing Party” & garnered a record (for a 3rdparty) 21.5% of the popular vote. Grover Cleveland spent his boyhood (1841-1850) in Fayetteville before moving to Clinton. Grover is the only President elected to non- consecutive terms, so Grover is our 22nd& 24thPresident. In 1886, Grover, a 49 year old bachelor, married 21 year old Frances Folsom in the Blue Room of the White House---the only President married in the White House. Frances had just graduated from Wells College. She & Grover had 5 children. In 1893 Grover underwent a secret major operation on a yacht in the LI Sound.
