Reflections of Our First Rotary District Conference .... by PE Doug Powell, MD
Cathy and I attended the district conference this weekend in Lake Placid. Club President, Bill Conole and Ward and June Vuillemot attended as well. The setting was beautiful, with spring coming, the mountains, lakes, new growth of flowers and leaves, and the hotel accommodated our large group with grace. Clubs in our district put up displays of their membership’s activities, works in the communities, ongoing efforts to be of service, and projects. This nicely complimented the lectures, dinners, and activities. The SRC display, created by Carthy, for the House of Friendship is pictured to the right. Club banners were proudly displayed as were the flags of the countries of our exchange students, who were in attendance. Pictured is Gahyeon proudly carrying in her home country's banner. An hour -long lecture was given by Mr. Finn in full hockey goalie uniform and pads. His points were well taken: That hockey and life as well as being a rotarian are very similar. The four elements of being a good hockey player include commitment, focus, patience, and having fun. He related that very nicely to being a Rotarian and to showing up for life in general. The other large focus was on membership. Many ideas to increase our numbers were given. I will discuss them with our membership committee. Cathy ane I are happy to have gone to the conference and are looking forward to a productive and fun year!
PRESIDENTS' CORNER... by Pres., Bill Conole
DISTRICT CELEBRATION - On Friday morning I am driving North to beautiful Lake Placid for the 2019 Rotary District 7150 District Conference. I look forward to joining PE Doug Powell , wife Cathy , PDG Ward Vuillemot & wife June & our YE Student Gahyeon. Outgoing District Governor Marv Joslyn will be presiding over this year’s conference. This conference is a great opportunity to reconnect with our Rotary friends from across our Rotary District 7150 & to relax in one of the most beautiful settings in New York State & in the USA. I wish more of you were joining us for this gala celebration. On my return I’ll have a full report on this year’s conference. (pictured is Bill with his All-American door prize)
PANCAKE BREAKFAST KICK-OFF - Last night our club launched our ticket sales & preliminary planning for our 2019 Pancake Breakfast. “All Hands on Deck’ is an old Navy term. In the old days when facing a challenging sea, the ship’s captain would yell “all hands on deck” to rouse the ship’s sailors to the deck to meet the challenge. This old sea expression fits our club’s Pancake Breakfast well. Foe fifty years our club members have joined together to make all fifty pancake breakfasts successes. Our pancake breakfast is a great opportunity for all of our club members to bond anew. The Skaneateles Rotary Club Annual Pancake Breakfast is a major community event. It’s a great way to bring our Skaneateles Community together to celebrate Father’s Day.
LAST WEEK... by Mary Giroux
THE BEGINNINGS - President Bill opened the meeting welcoming our guests, Andy Stevens who recently moved to Skaneateles and Terry McCormick, Skaneateles native now living in Virginia.
Rotary Foundation Giving - Bill Buterbaugh reminded everyone that there are only two months left to meet the club's goals for Foundation Giving. So far only 60% of members have made a contribution. Reminder letters will be sent out.
Ralph Jurgensen told us about his trip to Washington DC on last week's Honor Flight. Ralph had a great time and was moved by the experience. Thank you to Ralph and all of our Veteran members for your service. There were a lot of Happy Dollars in Ralph's honor!
District Conference - is coming up this weekend and will be attended by Bill Conole, Cathy & Doug Powell and Ward & June Vuillemot.
THE PROGRAM - It's only six weeks away!!!!!! Mary Giroux reviewed the upcoming schedule for our 51st Father's Day Breakfast on June 16th. Work has already begun and will really ramp up on June 13th, the Thursday before the picnic. Assignments for this year's breakfast were reviewed and both the schedule and assignment roster will be posted on the website. John Moran, our ticket sales chair, distributed packets of tickets to all members and stressed the need for advance sales to cover the pre-breakfast costs of supplies. A sign up sheet for selling at Tops was passed around and will be at future meetings
50-50 - won by Robin Jowaises; however the Queen remains hidden somewhere within a nearly full deck!
Guests - Andy Alexander and Terry McCormick
Attendance - 27 at 52% (53 members)
SAVE THE DATE(s) ... by Mary Giroux,Chair
Skaneateles Rotary Club's 51st annual Father’s Day Pancake Breakfast is June 16th.Please also mark your calendars, for Friday, June 14th AM and Saturday, June 15th AM for set-up, and Monday, June 17thAM for tear down. This makes 51 consecutive years holding our Club’s biggest fund raising event and we need every Rotarian to participate to insure its continued success. Please schedule to be in town that weekend to help out at this “fun filled” community event! This service project, which supports many worthy causes, only works if every Rotarian makes a full commitment. Thank you for your support.
WHAT's in a WORD? Inculcate - to influence someone to accept an idea, view, etc.
I believe that it is of the utmost importance that we all should feel and inculcate among the people and circulate amongst them what I call a sense of compatriotism. ........A.D. Patel, 1905-1969
