The Program Terry McCormick introduced our guest speaker, Meg O'Connell. Meg is a long time Skaneateles neighbor and Executive Director of the Allyn Foundation. The Allyn Foundation began in 1954 and is deeply committed to investing in the community for the welfare of all. Meg told us about the Salt City Market which is being developed as a combination food hall, office space and residences in downtown Syracuse. The Salt City Market's mission is to invest in the city, foster opportunities. engage diverse cultures and be a welcoming space. The food hall will offer diverse cuisine from talented entrepreneurs including Thai, Jamaican, Southern, Burmese Middle Eastern and Soul Food. There is also a grocery store and coffee shop. The Salt City Market is expected to open at the end of January so be sure to visit! This is a great investment in the City of Syracuse thanks to the Allyn Foundation. And, after last week's meeting our club received a heartfelt note from Meg O'Connell which reads "Thanks for having me present last night at your Rotary meeting. I recognized almost all the faces on the zoom call last night and was overwhelmed with gratitude for everyone's deep commitment to the community. I'm a transplant to Upstate New York but in my 30 years here in Skaneateles I'm always amazed at the altruism of the people and their commitment to build community. Everyone on the call last night has a true heart for service to others. Thanks again for the opportunity."
Holiday Basket UpdateMarv let us know that he received a nice thank you from the Skaneateles Ecumenical Food Pantry. The pantry services 130 families with food baskets for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. They also make monthly deliveries at Gateway and Village Landing and serve a number of families on a weekly basis. Thanks to all for your efforts in making the holiday season brighter for our neighbors!
The Ending Suzette led us in the Four Way Test. See you next week!
New Rotary Opportunities. ... by Ward
Out of all the chaos of the COVID epidemic has come some new an exciting opportunities to access new and exciting venues of Rotary information and happenings. A little sliver of silver among the dark clouds of COVID. Clubs and districts around the world are using virtual venues to share some exciting speakers, programs and ideas. For example; last week the Troy, Michigan Rotary club hosted live RI General Secretary John Hewko with over 1,200 Rotarians from 6 continents around the world participating (see three such opportunities below).
After attending over the years numerous on-site RI International conferences around the world I attended my first virtual RI international conference from my home last spring and have facilitated RLI seminars from comfort of my home office chair, to name just a few. No travel, no fuss, no expense ... and ... great Rotary experiences all ... and I have met many new faces that share the same Rotary excitement and commitments. Oh yes, I do miss the one on one, and face to face contact, but this new virtual world of Rotary forced upon us has been, of necessity, a real bonus. Try it, you'll like it!
