PRESIDENTS' CORNER ... by Pres., Bill Conole
HAPPY NEW YEAR! Last night after a 3 week “Rotary Furlough” our club swung into action for 2019. Last night’s meeting begun with an outstanding reporton our club’s December 2018 fundraising results. In just one month our club members raised almost $15,000 for the needy in the Skaneateles & CNY region. Our members can take pride in the fact that our December 2018 efforts surpassed any club in Rotary District 7150 & any other club, civic organization or church group in the greater Skaneateles region in their December contributions to the needy.  Our Rotary Club members willingness to pitch in & raise this amount of money for our local needy families, during the Holiday Season, underscores what a valuable asset our Skaneateles Rotary Club is to our community.
In America, for more than a century & a half, civic organizations, service clubs & volunteer organizations were vibrant contributors to the greater good of our communities.
From its humble beginnings 92 years ago, our Skaneateles Rotary Club has left an indelible mark on our community & in the world, through its member’s “service above self” efforts & International Rotary initiatives. Many today are saying that the golden age of voluntary association & service clubs, is over. In 2019 our club’s major challenge & resolution for 2019, must be to make ongoing efforts to bring new members into our Rotary Club “fold”. Only by doing this can we ensure that our club will continue to serve our community in the coming years.
LAST WEEK ... by Mary Giroux
THE BEGININGS
Happy New Year -President Bill opened the meeting by welcoming everyone back from the holiday break and wishing a Happy New Year to all.
Welcome - Tim Donovan welcomed guest Mandy Webster, the Assistant General Manager at the Hilton Garden Inn who is a candidate for the Leadership Cayuga program.  Tim also welcomed our speaker Kelly Springer.
Christmas Giving - President Bill thanked club members for all of their efforts in raising over $15,000 from the Christmas Dinner and Salvation Army bell ringing this holiday season.  As a club we were able to make spirits bright for members of our community this holiday season.
Club 200 - Cheryl Silvestrini reported that 102 tickets have been sold to date for this fundraising effort.  Please consider purchasing a ticket or two if you haven't already done so.  The first drawing took place at the meeting with $50 being won by Joe Giroux (Mary's brother) and Natalie (Danny Roche's granddaughter).  Remember that each ticket has multiple chances of winning!
THE PROGRAM
Kelly Springer, registered dietician, nutritionist and owner of Kelly's Choice was our speaker for the evening.  Kelly consults with a variety of organizations including school districts, non-profits, restaurants and private employers working on nutrition education programs for groups as well as individual nutrition counseling.  Kelly spoke about the importance of fruits and vegetable in our diet and their effect on our overall health and well being.  Kelly stated that fruits and vegetables are the most important food group and cited research about the positive effect of these foods in any form--fresh, frozen or canned.  Kelly's talk generated a lot of interest and questions from members.
50-50 -  Dana Coye won the first draw of the year but alas, the Queen of Spades has gone into winter hibernation and avoided being drawn
Guests - Mandy Webster and Kelly Springer who spoke.
Attendance - 20 at 28 %
Current Membership - 53

200 Club Fundraiser ... by Cheryl
It may not be as exciting as cracking eggs or flipping pancakes, but the “200 Club” Raffle is an easy way to raise money to benefit community and youth groups.  Here’s how it works:  we sell 200 tickets at $20 each for a total of $4,000.  We give away $1250 in prizes which leaves us with $2750 to use for worthy causes.
We will sell tickets starting 10/18/18.  Two $50 prizes will be drawn at our Club Meetings on  1/3, 1/10, 1/17, 1/24 & 1/31.  On 1/31, we will draw a $250 winner, as well as the $500 Grand Prize winner.  Also, all weekly winners will be put back into the raffle and be eligible for the Grand Prize!
We need to sell all 200 tickets for this raffle to work as outlined, so please consider selling at least 5 tickets to family, friends, co-workers, etc. – and don’t forget to buy your own!  Cheryl will have tickets available at all weekly meetings.  If paying by check, please make payable to Skaneateles Rotary Foundation.  Be sure the contact information is completed on the ticket and give that portion of the ticket to Cheryl along with ticket money/checks.  Thank you and good luck to everyone!
