LAST WEEK - Apr 1st, 2021... by Mary Giroux
Membership/Attendance: 52 Active members with 18 attending
Guests: Dorothea Hughes, guest speaker from the Skaneateles YMCAs
The Beginnings
The meeting opened with President Dave welcoming everyone to the April Fool's meeting of the Skaneateles Rotary Club. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited .
The Program
Dorothea Hughes, Director of the Skaneateles YMCA and no stranger to our club was introduced as the guest speaker for the evening. Dorothea began by telling us that during COVID "every day was a new day" . The challenges in dealing with COVID were many including staff furloughs, instituting new protocols, figuring out how to adhere to new rules promulgated by the CDC, Onondaga County, insurance carriers and New York State. Further complicating things, separate rules applied to separate areas of the Y such as the aquatic center, fitness center and skating rink. Capacity limits, disinfecting procedures, air filtration, maintaining information for contact tracing, screening members and training staff are a few of the many new tasks the Y faced. While figuring things out the Y continued to provide virtual services and programming to members during the shutdown including "compassion calls" to members needing contact. Gradual reopening of in person programs began in June and has continued through the present as allowed by ever changing rules. Through all of this Dorothea was happy to report that there have been no cases of COVID transmission at the Y. Dorothea and her staff are to be commended for all that they have done to maintain a safe place for the community. There was also a significant loss of membership during the last 12 months. Some revenue has been recovered through the federal PPP program and facility rental for blood drives, sports and filming for a movie but there is still a financial need. If you dropped your membership during the year please consider resuming it as lots of things are now happening at the Y! Thanks to Dorothea and all the staff for all that they do.
The Rest of the Meeting -
Rotarian Experiences - John O'Sullivan briefed us on his experiences as a Rotarian since his initial membership in the Syracuse RC 35 years ago. One of his primary focuses in the Skaneateles RC has been the Youth Exchange programs, primarily the outbound student activities, and he awaits its restart following COVID. John has actively served in many capacities for our club including Presidency in 2001-02. He observed that having to be ready to chair a meeting 52 times during the year, he had to hone his public speaking skills, which has stayed with him and served him well in his career over the years
Food Pantry Replenishment Drive - Andy Stevens updated the members on the progress to date of the upcoming Food Drive to take place on March 17th. He will supply Ward with a complete update including instructions and flyers to be emailed to members in the morning. (check your email for this document, and if you have not received it, contact Ward and he will re-send it to you)
