Speaker: Packy Taylor, American Legion's Boys State
American Legion Boys State is among the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruction for U.S. high school students. A participatory program in which students become part of the operation of local, county and state government, Boys State was founded in 1935 to counter the socialism-inspired Young Pioneer Camps. The program was the idea of two Illinois Legionnaires, Hayes Kennedy and Harold Card, who organized the first Boys State at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield. American Legion Auxiliary sponsors a separate but similar program for young women called Girls State.

PRESIDENTS' CORNER... by Pres., Doug Powell
Thursday's annual picnic was a great night to welcome the two new Youth Exchange students and to thank the volunteers who helped at the Pancake Breakfast. We used the St. James’ church room overlooking the lake.
The evening started with a spread of appetizers from the Rotary members. As expected, the appetizers were varied and delicious. This was followed by a buffet that clearly pleased the crowd.
After the pledge and anthem I welcomed everyone, noting the grandeur of the lake, sky and large event room at the church. I also mentioned the fact that this small community cares for its members. We do service projects locally, funded by Rotary functions. Largely, this is made possible by our biggest event—the pancake breakfast. The evening was to thank our volunteers. They understood that their hard work at the breakfast continued our local service projects.
I asked the crowd if they’d heard about the Polio epidemics—none of the younger people had ever seen or known anyone who had had Polio. We are that close to eradicating that scourge.
The point is we live in an ever-smaller world. We need to care about what happens abroad. We need to be on point when it comes to planning for the future. We need to continue to be global citizens and show compassion and generosity. We need to act internationally.
I told the two YE students that they will have a lovely time here and, when they return to their home countries, they will say that they stayed at a beautiful small village that cares and does service. I know this is true. This will rub off on the YE students as they proceed with their lives.
Mary Giroux and Gard Lorey made remarks about the pancake breakfast and YE programs to round out the night.
LAST WEEK... by Mary Giroux
Thanks and Welcome
President Doug graciously welcomed our exchange students (Simon and Amira), pancake breakfast volunteers, host families and club members to our 2019 Thank You - Welcome picnic dinner at St. James Church. We enjoyed a beautiful lake view while visiting with each other and enjoying all of the yummy appetizers.
Before dinner Mary Giroux thanked all of the volunteers and Rotarians that worked to make the 51st pancake breakfast a success. Over 2300 breakfasts were served and net profits were the highest of any year. We look forward to our 2020 breakfast, only 9 months away!.
Gard Lorey introduced our exchange students Simon and Amira and they each said a few words of introduction. Gard also introduced the host families for Amira and Simon and expressed our gratitude for their opening their homes to Amira and Simon.
A great meal followed and everyone especially enjoyed the traditional cake for dessert!
Guests: Many pancake breakfast volunteers, YE host families and Rotary families.

If you have completed Parts I, II & III, you are not done (there's more). The graduate sessions change each year. This year it will be focused on Fundraising and project development, which we Skantarians have had much dialog. This is a great chance to learn new techniques and share with others of the: what, how and when.

Oh BTW, Ward has promised those Skaneateles Rotarians that attend RLI in this Rotary year a hand-crafted bottle stopper with a RLI logo mounted in it.
As an incentive for Skaneateles Rotarians to visit other Rotary clubs to explore new ideas of community service and to meet new Rotary friends, Ward has offered to supply a hand-crafted bottle stopper, topped with an RI pin insert, to each member who visits four different District 7150 clubs, or one club outside of our district any place in our world.
