PRESIDENTS' CORNER ... by Pres., Mary Giroux
Lon Frucano passionately spoke about the ongoing opioid crisis: how it developed, the addiction process, the challenge of recovery, the stigma of addiction, the effects on families and the lack of effective treatment.
Last year our club participated in District 7170's (southern tier) Global Grant to Fight Addiction which was a partnership with clubs from Mexico, India and Canada. The objectives of the grant are well underway with the following actions:
A Teen Institute will be held in PennYan, NY in November to provide students with skills and knowledge to address the abuse of heroin and opiates within their schools and communities. 15 school districts will participate
Medical supplies, breathalyzers and furniture are being purchased for the Addiction Center of Broome County to help with their expansion.
Medical disposal boxes for unused prescription drugs are being placed within the District to create easy access for safe disposal of drugs.
A media campaign to include traditional media sites and social media is in process. The goal is to give access to critical information and sources of help in dealing with addiction.

THE BEGININGS:
Club 200 Fundraiser:Cheryl announced that there are only 56 tickets left in the Clu 200 Fundraiser. Ticket sales are ahead of last year. The 1st drawing will be held next week on the 5th ---so members still have time to buy a ticket.
Homeless:Amy Tormey was pleased to announce that our club has pledged $900 to assist Yorgin a formerly homeless student from Guatemala. This money will help Yorgin & his foster parents pay for the legal fees of setting up a legal guardianship for Yorgin.
District Grant:Cathy Powell reported that the filing process for our Shelter Box Grant has been completed. These shelter boxes may well soon be sent to the quake victims in Mexico & to the storm victims is Puerto Rico.
THE PROGRAM:
Opiod & Haroin Crisis: Tim Donovan introduced our speaker Lon Fricano BA, EMT-P. Currently Lon is the Director of Operations for TLC EMS-TLC MED TRANS in Auburn. Lon is a pioneer in emergency medical services. When Lon was only 15 in 1963 he joined the youth corps of an ambulance service on Long Island. Throughout his career in NY City & in CNY Lon has helped to develop emergency medical services to the sophisticated, technologically advanced, life saving service it is today.
Over the past few years Lon has been working diligently to heighten awareness of the mounting Opioid & heroin crisis that is growing to epidemic proportions in CNY & throughout our nation. As an EMT-P, Lon has been on the front lines caring for the addicted victims of opioid & heroin. Lon stressed that opioids & heroin addiction indiscriminately strikes people & families of all races, all faiths & all economic backgrounds. Annually more than 66,000 people a year are dying as the result of opioid & heroin addiction. In years past narcan, the drug used to treat overdoses in emergency situations, used to sit on the shelf for years unused. Now EMTs, police and first responders must administer narcan with alarming frequency. Surprisingly, people in the 45 to 54 age group make up the fastest growing group of opioid abusers. Lon urged everyone to become aware of the rapidly growing danger of opioid & heroin use in our area. The best prevention is to increase community awareness of this pervasive & pernicious plague. Lon fervently believes addicts need treatment not punishment. Lon passionately believes that only by joining together can we stem the rising tide of this pandemic. Lon responded to many questions from our members on this chilling topic.

FIRST DRAWING THIS WEEK - CLUB 200 FUND RAISER
200 Tickets at $20 each are be sold to members, friends & neighbors between now and October when 10 tickets (2 per week) will be drawn weekly with the winners receiving $50 each. The winning tickets will be recycled into the draw-bin for drawings the following weeks. So ..... multiple chances to win on a single ticket.
The whole event ends on Nov 16th, with two tickets will be drawn for $250 & $500. The $200 draw dates are: Oct. 5, 12, 19, 26 & Nov 2, and the $250 & $500 tickets will be drawn on Nov 16.
Cheryl Silvestrini will have the tickets for sale over August & September. Do not miss out on this opprotrunity as it is limited to 200 tickets.
This is fun way for our Club to raise up $2,750 to use for worthy causes throughout the year. We can only make the maximum amount ($2750) if ALL 200 tickets are sold. The key is for ALL members to participate in selling (and buying) tickets.
