If there are no objections made to the Club Secretary, in writing, by February 25th, dues are paid and he has received Skaneateles Rotary Information, Graff will be inducted into our membership at a meeting of mutual convenience.
Your Board of Directors met last week and the following is a short summary of discussions points and resolutions.

Foundation financials were reviewed by Kathy Crelot. .
Duane Weaver reviewed the Club account.
The Board reviewed and approved the new member application for Carl Froelich. (see membership notice in this issue of the newsletter)
Bill Conole reviewed the upcoming Club programs.
Cheryl Silvestrini reviewed two Worth Cause requests, one from the Community Band and one from Paige's Butterfly Run. In keeping with policy these funds will nut be disbursed until the next quarter's payments in March.
Potential grant recipients were discussed including the Community Center's fund for membership subsidy, the Spafford Historical Society and comfort bags for Paige's Butterfly Run. At the grant seminare we were advised that Shelter Box could not be used for a grant for a second year. The grant project will need to be finalized at the march Board meeting as the grant request is due March 31, 2018.

PRESIDENTS' CORNER ... by Pres., Mary Giroux
We had a good turnout despite the wintery weather. Sal Strods gave us an update on the Spafford Historical Society's work on the historic Grange building and the upcoming events. The building is available as a venue for a variety of events and meetings. Becky Culbertson told us about the fascinating program put on for fourth graders whereby they experience an "1890 School Day." Thank you both and thank you Bill Conole for arranging this program.
Chris Cheney is looking for members to participate in the Passport to Fellowship Challenge whereby four club members visit four other clubs. If you are interested please contact Chris.
John Shannon was fondly remembered by a number of club members during Happy Dollars.

Question: What is the origin of the Rotary Logo
Answer:A wheel has been the symbol of Rotary since our earliest days. The first design was made by Chicago Rotarian Montague Bear, an engraver who drew a simple wagon wheel, with a few lines to show dust and motion. The wheel was said to illustrate “Civilization and Movement.” Most of the early clubs had some form of wagon wheel on their publications and letterheads. Finally, in 1922, it was decided that all Rotary clubs should adopt a single design as the exclusive emblem of Rotarians. Thus, in 1923, the present gear wheel, with 24 cogs and six spokes was adopted by the “Rotary International Association.” A group of engineers advised that the geared wheel was mechanically unsound and would not work without a “keyway” in the center of the gear to attach it to a power shaft. So, in 1923 the keyway was added and the design which we now know was formally adopted as the official Rotary International emblem.

THE BEGININGS:
50th Skaneateles Rotary Club Breakfast — John Moran & Jim McQuiggan asked members to assist them in soliciting merchants for their sponsorship for our 2018 Pancake Breakfast. John & Jim have a list of 41 merchants. So far members have volunteered to solicit 36 of the 41. John passed around a list of the 5 merchants not covered so far.
Valentine Dinner - is set for next week, February 15th. Spouses & significant others are welcome. $25 per person. So far 26 members 7 spouses are scheduled to come.
Shelter Box - Lori Ruhlman asked members to contribute to the Interact Club’s drive to raise money to purchase a Shelter Box. The students are near their goal & need our assistance to put them over the top.
Exchange Students Host Families - Gard Lorey noted that our club is experiencing difficulty lining up host families for our exchange students. This year, to host 2 exchange students we had to struggle to line up the requisite 6 host families. This coming year we have 3 outbound exchange students. To accept 3 exchange students 9 host families will be needed. Gard asked our members to help find host families.
John Shannon - President Mary announced that long time Rotarian John Shannon passed away. John Moran rose to salute John Shannon as a fellow Vietnam Veteran & as a friend to all.
THE PROGRAM
Spafford Area Historical Society (SAHS) — Sal Strods, President of the SAHS opened his presentation with a brief history of the Borodino Grange Hall. Sal grew up in Skaneateles & graduated from SCHS. The Borodino Grange Hall was built in 1833. For nearly 200 years the Grange Hall has served as the central meeting place for citizens of greater Borodino. Since 2000 extensive efforts have been made to modernize & to restore this historic building. Considerable progress has been made, but more needs to be done. As a result of these improvements the Grange Hall now serves as a “warm & inviting meeting place”. It now serves the community as site for concerts, private parties & community meetings. Sal noted that plans are underway to replace the front steps, install installation & a water purification system & to add a small kitchen.
Side Hill School - Becky Culbertson, attired as an 1888 teacher, opened her presentation by giving a brief history of the Side Hill School. Becky’s father Bunt, Osborne, was a member of our club for 57 years. The Side Hill School was built in 1813 & stayed in service until 1956. It was a classic one room school where one teacher taught several grades of students. Since 1989 the SAHS has restored this historic school to the way it looked in 1888. Becky taught elementary school in Northern California for several decades before returning to Borodino. Every year Becky conducts a 2 week program for students from 3 nearby school districts so they can experience US education in 1888 in the Side Hill School. Becky dresses as an 1888 teacher & has her students wear bonnets & hats & teaches students from an 1888 curriculum. Becky noted that today’s students seem to struggle with her 1879 4th Grade McGuffey’s Reader. Students are taught to write cursive using ink pens & ink wells. Ciphering (math) is taught on student chalk boards. During recess students play games common in the late 1800s. Becky asked our club’s help in continuing to restore the historic Side Hill School.
