We certainly had a delicious meal prepared by the talented culinary students at BOCES. It was great to see the pride on their faces when they were introduced and especially when Umesh proposed a toast! Mark Fitzgerald told us about the program and how real world experiences are an integral part of the learning experience. After dinner Steve Woodard treated us to a tour of the facilities and I think we were all amazed. The breadth and depth of the BOCES programs leaves no question that graduates have an edge upon program completion. Hats off to Steve, Mark and the students and let's spread the word about this great resource.

RING THE BELL - Our annual Salvation Army Kettle project, at the Tops Market commences Friday, December 8th. The schedule can be found on our WEBSITE by going the the Site Pages on the left side of the Home page. The Program: Dinner at & Tour of Cayuga Onondaga BOCES Facility
President Mary thanked the BOCES Culinary students for the excellent dinner they served our members & guests. Steve Woodard the BOCES Director of Adult, Alternative & Career & Technical Education welcomed everyone to the Cayuga Onondaga BOCES facility.
Steve explained that this 200,000 squares feet state of the art BOCES learning is only 10 years old & is his & the staffs “pride & joy. Steve called on the Culinary Students & their Instructor Chef to step forward & introduce themselves. Currently 50 students are enrolled in the BOCES Culinary Arts program. After two years of training all of the graduates go to work in local restaurants or go on to upper level culinary schools such as Paul Smith & Cobleskill Colleges & the Culinary Institute of America (CIA). BOCES Instructor Chef Fitzgerald proudly detailed the comprehensive culinary training his students receive.
After dinner, Steve Woodward invited everyone to join him on a tour of four of the training sites for the following four programs: 1- Cosmetology, 2-Health Occupations, 3- Culinary Arts, 4-Machinery & Welding. All of the programs have large labs that replicate their future work sites. Classrooms, lockers & bathrooms are connected to these labs. The Cosmetology Lab is a well equipped beauty salon. The 1,000 hours of training & instruction the Cosmetology students receive qualify them to become licensed cosmetologists in NYS. Upon graduations students can work as cosmetologists or go to college for additional training. The Health Occupations Center trains students to become Home Health Aides & Certified Nursing Assistants. Over the past 5 years 100% of the BOCES students passed their certification exams. Graduates of these programs work in local hospitals & nursing homes. Many students opt to further their nursing training by entering LPN & RN programs. The Culinary Arts kitchen & food prep area is large & immaculate. In addition to food preparation & proper cleaning techniques Culinary students receive classes on food etiquette. The students run a “Bistro Nosh” that is open to the public for lunch three days a week. The Machinery & Welding Lab contains a full array of modern, high tech machinery & welding equipment.
Steve Woodard stressed that all 16 of the programs offered by BOCES are designed to correspond to career fields where there is a high demand for qualified employees. After graduating BOCES students can enter the workforce or go on to college for additional education & training. All BOCES students can take courses in English, math & business that help to enhance their opportunities to pursue additional training or college. If the students opt for college the BOCES training they’ve received may enable them to earn money to help pay for college or additional training. BOCES trains their students for work with hands on education & training & by stressing punctuality, proper attire & appearance & how to properly meet & interact with employers. Currently Cayuga Onondaga BOCES serves 9 high schools-7 in Cayuga County & 2 in Onondaga County [including Skaneateles High School]. Over 600 students are enrolled in the Cayuga Onondaga BOCES Program.

ANNUAL CHRISTMAS FUNDRAISER – Dec. 7th ... by Cheryl Silvestrini
The Skaneateles Rotary Club’s Annual Christmas Fundraiser will be held on Thursday, December 7th, at the Skaneateles Country Club. We will begin with a Happy Hour at 6 p.m., followed by a traditional family-style turkey dinner at 7 p.m. Tickets are $30 and can purchased in tables of 8 and 10. You may contact Amy Tormey for tickets. Pre-paying for tickets with either cash or a check is highly recommended.
Please encourage Rotarians, family, friends, co-workers, etc., to not only buy a ticket to the event, but to ATTEND the event. The money from the donations of attendees is what we rely on to make this event successful. Also, we need the support of all Rotarians in coming up with raffle prizes. The goal is to have at least 50% of those who attend win a prize.
While local merchants and professionals will be canvassed again this year for prize donations, all Rotarians are also asked to donate prizes. The committee encourages Rotarians to buy prizes worth at least $30 and to purchase from local merchants. This year – on a trial basis – the committee has decided to forego purchasing prizes from Best Buy. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that all Rotarians contribute a prize for the raffle. Also, consider donating a prize from your business or the company you work for. Please let Roy MacDonald or Dave Piper know in advance of the event what you will be bringing in the way of a prize. Even if you can’t attend the event, please contribute a raffle prize.
