Board of Directors Mtg notes ... by Mary Giroux
Your Board of Directors met on Apr 4tr. The following is a brief of the discussions and actions taken.
Attendees: Doug Hill, Jay Stith, Mary Giroux, Andy Stevens, Rosemary Mondo, Ed Evans & Ayham Boucher
President Doug Hill opened the meeting at 5:00.
Minutes: Minutes of the February 2024 meeting were approved.
Financials: Jay reviewed the Foundation financials. The club is in good shape. The foundation has a payout potential from the Community Foundation account. It was decided to leave this with the Community Foundation account. (motion by Jay, second by Ed)
Worthy Cause Approvals: A motion was made by Mary and seconded by Doug to approve donations to the following: Advocates. Laker Limo, Boy's State and Operation Walk NY. The Board discussed unplanned expenses submitted for reimbursement by members. It was agreed that club policy would be that expenses in excess of $50 must be submitted for Board approval prior to incurring the expense. This will be added to club by-laws and voted on by membership at a future meeting.
Pancake Breakfast: Mary updated the board on the breakfast status to date. Publicity was discussed. Mary will contact Lori Ruhlman about a possible article in The Citizen and Facebook postings. Rosemary will research obtaining a banner and what is involved in placing it in the Village. Marv has agreed to handle posters and Chuck O places yard signs. Payment options for tickets was discussed. Ayham will look into the Square option to be used in addition to Venmo.
New Member Status: John Buterbaugh will be inducted on April 18th. Rosemary will handle this. Several potential new members were discussed.
Exchange Student Program: Jay updated the Board and presented the budget for the club’s expenses related to the program. We have one inbound student next year. Host families are being sought. Three families are needed. Current exchange students are doing well.
Community Service Projects: Highway clean up was discussed and will be deferred until Fall. Our May project is our annual Food Drive which culminates in collection and drop off on Saturday, May 4th. Andy updated us on the process and will be handing out bags and flyers at the April 11 Happy Hour. A club member is needed to hand out bags at our April 18 meeting as Andy will be away. Andy is also coordinating with the Boy Scouts for their assistance. Ed will be serving breakfast sandwiches at his house which is the drop off site on May 4th.
Connor Finlay has agreed to take over the Community Service Chair position from Jay effective July 1st.
Annual Spring Event - Our Spring celebration being arranged by Ed and Bill B will be May 16th at The Sherwood. Similar to last year’s Kentucky Derby theme this year’s theme will be The Preakness.
Next meeting: June 13, 2024 at The Sherwood at 5:00.

The Beginnings: President Doug presided over the meeting and led us in the pledge. Guests were welcomed: Larry Jerome, Frind of Doug's.
> Samaritan Center in Syracuse on Saturday, March 23. Was a great success (see brief below)
> Service Project: CNY BFTW packing at Waterman Elementary School was completed on Wed. March 27 was successful. (see brief below.

> Announcements: Happy Hour at the Legion next week to be hosted by Pam and Vince. Restock the Pantry Food Drive coming up soon. See details in brief below. Mark your calendar for Spring Celebration on May 16th. Details to follow.
The Program: We got to know three of our newest members this week as they gave their classification talks.
> Dillon Brown joined the club in June 2023. He grew up in the Southern Tier of NY attending high school at Otselic Valley HS and became interested in the healthcare industry. Attending Conesius College and then the University of New England, Dillon is now a pharmacist working for United Health Care doing medication management therapy for his patients and giving Dillon "a good work/life balance". Dillon and his wife Katie live on West Lake Road with Fred and George, their two cats.
> Katie Brown also joined the club in June 2023. Katie was born and brought up in Annapolis MD, played lacrosse and field hockey in her youth. She was inspired to become a hospital pharmacist by her Mom who is a NICU pharmacist. Katie and Dillon met on their first day of pharmacy school. In 2020 she and Dillon moved to Skaneateles to be closer to family. Katie works at Upstate Community Hospital where she gets to rotate between units and enjoy the diversity of a smaller hospital. Both Kathie and Dillon enjoy being on the water, hiking, fishing and trying out new wines in the Finger Lakes region.
> Sharon O'Connell joined the club just a few weeks ago. Although a native of Cheyenne WY Sharon has been a Skaneateles neighbor for 40 years. Sharon has two sons whom she refers to as "the legacy of her marriage". She worked as the middle school librarian in Skaneateles for many years and now works as a part time librarian while also running an Air B&B in the summertime on the lake. Sharon told us about some of her special projects while working at the middle school: having the students interview WW II vets, teaching the students to do video interviews of community members, the Japan Paper Crane project and the Kazakistan project. Sharon threw out a "teaser" saying that she would reveal her current project soon.
We are so fortunate to have Dillon, Katie and Sharon as our fellow club members!
The Ending: Doug led us in the (Four + one) Five Way Test.
Restock Local Food Pantries
We're ready to do it again thanks to Andy's organization efforts! Our annual food drive to help the Skaneateles and Spafford Food Pantries is in the works. At the April 11 Legion Happy Hour Andy will have bags and flyers for us to pass out to friends and neighbors. For those not at the Happy Hour bags will be available at our April 18 meeting. Collection day is Saturday morning, May 4th from 9 til noon. Donations should be taken to Ed's house at 46 W Lake Street where you will be treated to a hearty breakfast sandwich prepared by Chef Ed.
“This could not have been done without those who rolled up their sleeves and pitched in,” said Stevens, who organized the drive. “Thank you to all the Rotarians who solicited food and monetary donations from their family, friends, neighbors and colleagues.”
Rotarians gathered food from front porches and then did a massive sorting job in the large garage of Rotarian Ed Evans. Throughout the drive, food was also collected in a box in front of Delmonico Insurance on Fennell Street. “There was a great response,” said Mary Gaffney, who managed the donations at the business. In addition to filling the box daily with food, some residents dropped off gift cards, she said.
Stevens thanked the many Rotarians who “contributed their wisdom, time and muscle to make the project a success.”
On Saturday, April 8th, two of our members (Sharon & Ward) attended the newly combined district'sCNY Rotary District training assembly in Verona. The event was well attended by the incoming leaders of many the newly formed district clubst that now includes much of CNY. The day included general sessions, focused breakout sessions, and a trade show space with booths for each of our newly formed CNY Rotary committees and programs. Of particular interest is the newly expanded District Grant structure and procedures, which was throughly explained. It was a wonderful opportunity to share new ideas and projects with many other like minded Rotarians from across CNY. A real Rotary Ah-Ah moment in our Rotary adventure.
March 23rd's Skaneateles Rotary Club's showing for the Samaritan Center mid-day meal was tremendous! All 17 slots, which was the maximum we had positions for, were filled by nine Rotarians and their spouses & family. I believe everyone truly enjoyed being there to help serve many of the less fortunate and hungry folks in Syracuse on a snowy day. Picture by Craig F. (behind the lens). SRC Bookleggers at Work .... by Ward On Wednesday Mar 27th, Rotarians & guest (Gary, Ed, Andy, John B. and Ward) gathered at the Waterman Elementary school to glean gently used books for the CNY Rotarian Books for the World international project, which provided much needed educational and reading materials to children around our world. Since 2008, Skaneateles Rotary Clubs have gleaned and packed 56 pallets (1,353 cartons) from the Skaneateles Region. (Pictured are; Chuck, Ed & Andy)
