The Program-The Finger Lakes Land Trust
Andy Zepp, Executive Director of the Finger Lakes Land Trust gave a detailed presentation of the organization’s conservation work throughout the Finger Lakes Region with a special emphasis on areas around Skaneateles Lake. Andy has more than 30 years of experience in conservation activities and holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from Cornell University. The Finger Lakes Land Trust, with a staff of 16, currently protects more than 28,000 acres in the 12-county region – approximately the size of Vermont. Its work is focused in three primary areas: 1) creating nature preserves which are open to the public, 2) managing conservation easements, of which there are currently 160 agreements, and 3) buying and selling properties for conservation areas. The land trust is about much more than keeping the Finger Lakes clean and healthy, it also saves natural habitats for birds and other wildlife and well as protect tributaries to the lakes that help function as cleaning areas/kidneys for the water going into the lakes. Among the key threats to the Finger Lakes are climate change, invasive mussels, loading of too many nutrients into the lakes, today’s farming methods and deeper and deeper ditches which accelerate runoff of harmful materials into the lakes.
