Board of Directors Mtg notes ... by Mary Giroux

Your Board of Directors met on Jan 5th.The following is a brief of the discussions and actions taken.

Attendees: Jay Stith, Mary Giroux, Andy Stevens, Dave Lee, Rosemary Mondo, Doug Hill, Mike Tierney, Lori Ruhlman, Ayham Boucher Marv Langley (Rotarian/Foundation Board) and Bill Buterbaugh (Rotarian/guest)

Minutes: Minutes from the December meeting were approved

Financials: Marv summarized foundation financials for the period ending 12/31/2022. Our Holiday Basket event was a record breaker. The ability to accept credit cards as payment was a big help.

Slate of Officers 2023-2024: The following slate of officers for July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2024 was approved by the board and will be up for member vote at the club's annual meeting on Jan 19th:

Club By Law changes: The board approved the following changes to club by laws and members will vote at the January 19th Annual Meeting:

Change the number of Board of Directors from 8 to 5. The rationale is that club membership has declined and this will provide adequate representation.

Change the schedule of board meetings from monthly to bi-monthly. The president or two board members may call special meetings as needed.

Resignation: The resignation of Steve Schwartz was accepted by the board.

Foundation Update: Bill B reported that contributions to date are $4200 with 19 members donating. Reminder letters to those that have not yet made a donation will be sent in February.

Service Projects: Jay reported that the January service project will be helping the Sunrise Club with Winterfest the last weekend in January. More information will follow on future projects.

Membership: Application was received from Chad Martin and one is expected from Conner Findlay. Rosemary and Mike agreed to share responsibility for the new member process to include and orientation to Rotary and what club membership entails. President Ayham formally appointed Rosemary and Mike as the Membership Chairs.

Worthy Causes: Donations to the following were approved: Rescue Mission, CNY Land Trust and Sarah's Guest House.

Next meeting: Thursday March 2nd.

Annual Meeting Notice

The Annual Meeting of the Skaneateles Rotary Club will be held on Thursday, January 19th at the regular club meeting. Members will be asked to vote on the following:

Slate of Officers for the 2023-2024 Rotary Year:

Changes to By Laws:

Article 2, section 1 - Change the number of directors from 8 to 5

Article 3, Section 1 - Change the number of Directors to 5 serving a two year term

Article 5, Section 4 - Change the schedule of regular Board meetings from monthly to bi-monthly

Membership/Attendance - 38 active members, 11 attending

Guests - Adele delaCentina, visiting Rotary member from San Francisco, Connor Findley (Bill B's friend) and Chad Martin (Jay's friend) who are applying for membership, Dillon and Katie Brown who are friends of Dave Lee and interested in the club and Pam Stern from the morning club as a guest of Lee Bennett.

The Meeting - President Ayham called the meeting to order and led us in the Pledge. Ayham welcomed our guests and club members to the first meeting of 2023. Although there was no formal program the following club business was discussed:

-Thank you notes were received from Laker Limo, Baltimore Woods and Skaneateles Outreach

-Ayham summarized many club projects completed in 20222 and looks forward to many more in 2023

-The club's Annual Meeting will take place on January 19th. See article below for more information.

-Winterfest is the last weekend in January. A member of the Sunrise club will attend our Jan 19th meeting to solicit volunteers.

-Bill B handed out a first quarter schedule for club meetings/events

-Bill B summarized Foundation giving to date. $4200 has been donated toward our $5500 club goal. 19 members have donated. If you haven't made a donation (any amount is great) please do so.

-Lee Bennett announced that the youth exchange program has three outgoing candidates who are in the process of being interviewed. Pam Stern from the Sunrise Club is working with our club on this process.

- Chuck Williams noted that 2027 will be our club's 100th anniversary. We need to begin planning to make 2027 a special year!

Members and guests enjoyed their dinner and lively conversation.

Jay led us in the Four Way Test.

International Responsibilities of a Rotarian

As an international organization, Rotary offers each member unique opportunities and responsibilities unlike those of other groups one might join. Although each Rotarian has first responsibility to uphold the obligations of citizenship of his or her own country, membership in Rotary enables Rotarians to take a somewhat different view of international affairs. In the early 1950s a Rotary philosophy was adopted to describe how a Rotarian might think on a global basis. Here is what it said:

"A world-minded Rotarian:

• looks beyond national patriotism and considers himself as sharing responsibility for the advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace;

• resists any tendency to act in terms of national or racial superiority;

• seeks and develops common grounds for agreement with peoples of other lands;

• defends the rule of law and order to preserve the liberty of the individual so that he may enjoy freedom of thought, speech and assembly, and freedom from persecution, aggression, want and fear;

• supports action directed toward improving standards of living for all peoples, realizing that poverty anywhere endangers prosperity everywhere;

• upholds the principles of justice for mankind;

• strives always to promote peace between nations and prepares to make personal sacrifices for that ideal;

• urges and practices a spirit of understanding of every other man's beliefs as a step toward international goodwill, recognizing that there are certain basic moral and spiritual standards which will ensure a richer, fuller life."

That is quite an assignment for any Rotarian to practice in thoughts and actions!

ZOOM..ZOOM....ZOOM!!!

Dave Lee has graciously volunteered to set up equipment so that winter club meetings can be attended by our snowbird members. Meeting format will continue to be dinner first and then the speaker at about 7:15. Club members who would like to attend by Zoom must RSVP to Dave Lee by the Monday evening just prior to the meeting. Zoom will only be set up if RSVPs have been received. New Meeting Schedule!!

Members voted in favor of a new meeting schedule for our club. Starting in August the schedule for meetings within a month is:

First Thursday - Dinner meeting with speaker. Meeting starts at 6:30 and ends at 8:00
Second Thursday - Optional attendance at Happy hour from 5:30 to 6:30.
Third Thursday - Dinner meeting with speaker. Meeting starts at 6:30 and ends at 8:00
Fourth Thursday - No meeting
Fifth Thursday (when applicable) - Dinner meeting with speaker. Meeting starts at 6:30 and ends at 8:00

With fewer meetings attendance is more important than ever!
