LAST WEEK - Aug 20, 2020 ... by Mary
Membership/Attendance:  - 51 Active members - 17 attending
Guest: John Buterbaugh
Pledge - President Dave Lee opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and welcomed our guest John Buterbaugh, Bill's son.
A bit of history - As it was the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II and Japan's surrender, Chuck O'Neil told us about his father's 21st birthday which he celebrated on a Navy ship adjacent to where the official surrender took place. Surely, a memorable 21st birthday!
Fire and Water - Dave reviewed plans for the Volunteer Fire Department ribbon project and fundraiser and encouraged us to share the info with family, friends and neighbors.  The project will help replace funds that would normally be raised by the SVFD during Labor Day field days and casino night which were cancelled due to COVID and to also recognize the service of this critical volunteer organization.
Baltimore Woods Grant - Dale Drake announced that trail work will begin in mid to late September.  Funds have been received from other participating clubs (Marcellus, Camillus and Skaneateles Sunrise).
Future meeting format - Ed Evans has been in discussions with The Sherwood and they are ready to welcome us back.  Capacity will be 30 people, drinks will be served at the table and meals will cost $20.  The goal is to begin in person meetings October 15th.  In the meantime Zoom meetings will continue with a tentative in person meeting at the Legion pavilion on September 24th.
Fundraising Committee - Headed by Jay Steth, the committee will meet in the upcoming week to focus on fundraising for the Christmas Basket.
The Program - Bill Huba, fellow club member, told us of his experiences in Afghanistan when he worked for the FBI.  Bill spent 18 months in Afghanistan working on a task force whose mission was to track down fraud involving U.S. funds during the rebuilding process.  Cases ranged from simple fuel theft to more complex cases of bid rigging on multi million dollar projects.  Bill described parts of his experience as "surreal" , saying that he liked the variety of cases.  Thank you Bill for your service.
Four Way Test - The meeting ended with the 4-way test.
PRESIDENTS' CORNER... by co-Pres., Dave
Wow.  I wake up this morning and it hits me-  it has already been 2 months into my service as President. It has been an honor and a privilege to be here.
No one must remind us that the last 6 months have been challenging for all of us in our everyday lives, but especially for organizations and congregations of people.  For many, their very survival is at stake. Rotary clubs are no exception. The good news is that most are adapting and moving forward to accomplish the mission and purpose that we are all about.
I am proud that we as a club have adapted and barely missed a beat. The inability to continue business as usual has not got in the way of finding ways to serve others.
I am proud of our initiating 9 new members into the club in the past year. That serves to demonstrate that there are people out there that share our goals and interests.
I am pleased and impressed by the participation in our zoom meetings, and the communication links that have been maintained. Our online meetings have improved as everyone has learned and become more comfortable. Our website is outstanding and an invaluable asset to our membership. This all would have been nearly impossible without the technology we have at our fingertips.
Last Thursday night we were successful in broadcasting our live meeting to Ward at home through Facebook Live as well as being able to post that video on a private Facebook Group so others may see it later. There is much more potential here.
It’s clear that when our meeting formats return to a more normal state that we will want to take advantage of the ability to include people in our activities without having to be in the same location. Our snowbirds and travelling members can be with us all year.
That said, we have a need for more help and expertise in the technology area. Between the meeting and broadcasting mediums, website, and fundraising platforms, we have a real need for the expertise to engineer and facilitate them. This support will make it much easier for all the officers, committee chairs and members to do their job and increase the participation of all the membership. Please give some thought about how you might be able to help us out.

Bows to Honor our Volunteer Firemen
(Rotary Fire & Water Tribute project)
Volunteers turned out on Friday to assemble 200 Red & Blue bows to be displayed around town on Labor Day honoring our Skaneateles Volunteer Fireman. They included Skaneateles Sunrise and Evening Rotarians & guests.  Many hands made the task fun and easy, and was for a very good cause. (Special thanks go out to:  SRC- Dave, Mary, Rosemary, Karen, Ward, Jay, and Alice & daughter; SSRC- Chris, Joyce and Doug)
Presidents Chris & Dave are asking all our members to reach out to their friends and neighbors and encourage them to make a donation to the cause by accessing the Labor Day weekend Rotary Fire & Water Tribute webpage at: https://www.supportsvfd.com
Rotary and its GPEI Partners Celebrate
a Monumental Achievement
The World Health Organization (WHO) on August 25 announced that transmission of the wild poliovirus has officially been stopped in all 47 countries of its African region.  This a a historical and vital step toward global eradication of polio, which is Rotary's top priority.
After decades if hard won gain in the region, Rotary and its partners in the (GPEI) - WHO, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, UNICEF, and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Gavi, the vaccine alliance - are proclaiming the milestone an achievement in public health. They offer it as proof that strong commitment, coordination and perseverance can rid the world of polio.
