Autumn Mission for Women Veterans  by Mary

The Skaneateles United Methodist Church is collecting items sorely needed by Women Veterans, particularly those that are patients on the Behavioral Health wing at the Syracuse VA Medical Center.  The goal of this project is to provide appropriate clothing within the guidelines of the facility and give dignity to the Women who have served.  The following are items that are needed:
  • Women's briefs (new and in packaging, the larger the package the better
  • Men's T Shirts and athletic tank top style shirts (assorted sizes and the larger the package quantity the better)
  • Sport bras (assorted sizes and must be all clothe)
  • Shower shoes (Flip flops or slip ons such as Crocs.  Size 6 through 8 are most needed
  • Toothpaste of any size
  • Body wash
  • Deodorant
  • Lotion
  • Dental floss
  • Feminine wash
  • Shampoo and conditioner
  • Brushes and combs (without extended handle)
Monetary donations may be made to "Skaneateles United Methodist Church" or "SUMC" with "Women Veterans" written in the memo line.  Drop offs of the above items can be made at the church Monday through Friday from 10 to noon.

LAST WEEK - Sep 02, 2021 ... by Mary
Membership/Attendance: 20 Active members - 13 Guests attending
Guests: RIDE Drew Kessler, Vicki & two sons; PDGs Deb Glisson & Phyllis Danks; AG Charlie Smith; Visitarian: Bonnie Colle, Helen Shafffer, Robert Shields, Ms CJ Sturtevent, and mother, John Buterbaugh (Bill's son),Anna Marie Neuland and husband Bill
The Beginning: President Terry warmly welcomed all of our guests after which we recited the Pledge of Allegiance and sang "America the Beautiful."  For once we were all in tune with each other! Ward announced that the polio stopper project was again in full force/  (see special offer below).lAny District 7150 member donating $100 toward polio plus over and above regular annual  giving will receive a beautifully hand crafted wine bottle stopper made by Ward.  Ward's polio stoppers have contributed over $27,000  to stopping polo.  Club members enjoyed a delicious traditional summer meal of hotdogs and hamburgers.  Applause for Ann's and Brad's culinary skills was resounding!
The Program:  President Terry gave a warm introduction to our guest speaker, Drew Kessler.  Drew joined Rotary at age 20 and has held a number of leadership positions.  He is currently Zone Rotary International Director Elect, Zones 28 & 31 for the 2022-2024 year.  Drew is a member of the North Rockland Rotary Club.  He joined 20 years ago and as a young man found that all club members were there for essentially the same purpose:  to give back to the community.
Drew talked about how the ideal rotary club is "a little bit of every demographic" and that potential membership starts with attraction to Rotary's goals and usually boils down to service opportunities.  A common thread amongst members is that they want to "get their hands dirty" and enjoy the comradery and fellowship that Rotary offers.  Attracting new members that will be involved boils down to a platform that works for all members and is relevant to all members.  Drew also talked about the effect that just one person can have citing the beginning of two Rotary initiatives, Shelter Box and Polio Plus, that were started by single Rotary members.
Drew's talk was both informative and thought provoking.
Four Way Test was led by Charlie Smith, fellow Rotarian from Camillus.

Upcoming Community Service Opportunities
Volunteers Needed ... by Jay
DUCK Dash - On Saturday September 25th the Chamber of Commerce, YMCA, and other local non-profits are hosting Duck Dash between 2 and 4pm behind the CVS in the Village. The event consists of games for kids, food, drinks, and several duck races where people throw plastic ducks into the creek and see whose duck is fastest – it is geared toward kids, and younger families, and grandparents but anyone is welcome.
Volunteer opportunities include set up/clean up, ticket sorting, and 3 to 5 people calling the race finishes from in the creek.
If you are interested please contact me so I can give the organizers a sense of how many people we will have to help (315-209-0753 or jstith@healthstrategyassoc.com).
