Last WEEK May 19th, 2022 ... by Mary Giroux
Guests - Cory Soules & Rescue dog, Fisher
Membership/Attendance- 42 Active Members 16 members attending.
The Beginnings - Mary led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Mary also announced the passing of our fellow club member, Ralph Jurgensen. Ralph passed away on May 13th, Graveside services will be held on July 6th at Lakeview Cemetery. We will miss Ralph's company.
The Program - Mary introduced Corey Soules and his search and rescue partner, Fisher. Corey is a Certified Flight Paramedic with Mercy Flight and also a volunteer with Cayuga County Highland Search and Rescue. Fisher is a three year old border collie and certified search and rescue canine. Corey told us about the training process for Fisher which began when he was nine weeks old. Fisher is trained to respond to cues in German so that he responds only to his handler. The Search and Rescue teams are called on by county sheriff's departments, state police and FEMA to assist in live searches and cadaver searches. Corey explained the highly sensitive sense of smell in dogs and how they can detect and differentiate between odors and detect the tiniest of human remains. Search and rescue dogs were first trained in New York State in the 1980's. Corey and Fisher make a great team as evidenced by their enthusiasm.
As a courtesy to Rotary, The Sherwood provides us marketable space for our meetings at no charge. In return all that they have asked is that we provide a fairly accurate count so that they can manage their space & staff to serve us and their other guests. With Ward’s help reminding us in every weekly bulletin it seems pretty easy to call, message or email me your plan to attend in person. If for no other reason that upholding numbers 2 and 4 of our 4-Way test, please try to RSVP your in person attendance.
Appreciatively, Ed Evans
