Diversity, Equity & Inclusion - Tai Ngo Shaw
Tai Ngo Shaw spoke to the club about his history and now ongoing work in the Central New York area to help refugees adapt to their new home and advocate for their equal rights in the face of discrimination and lack of diversity acceptance in the community. Among his efforts is the CNY Blessing Boxprogram which helps feed refugees with food they want and know how to cook as well as provide essential toiletries for personal care.Tai urged us to celebrate our refugees and attend World Refuge Day in Syracuse on June 20th, 2022. Tai is Vietnamese and came to the US in 1981 at the age of 10. He was adopted by the Shaw family, hence his last (American) name. A graduate of Alfred University, he now lives in East Syracuse and runs CNY Uniforms Plus, a business that makes and sells uniforms. Tai is president of the New Americans Forumand participates on six boards of organizations that help refugees get fairer and more equal treatment when it comes to things such as health insurance, representation on police task forces, job acquisition and ongoing support as well as fighting hate crimes and ensuring that charitable funds are distributed equally among smaller refugee groups – not just to big name and large charitable organizations. Among others, he helps provide support services for approximately 1500 Vietnamese families that are located primarily in the Clay and Liverpool communities.
