PRESIDENT'S CORNER ... by Prez Bill
Greetings, Skantarians! - Last week, we were enjoyed a visit from our District leadership as well as some citizens from Auburn, to include our speaker (please see PP Bill Conole's write-up for a further description - thank you, Bill!). All were encouraged to attend upcoming Rotary and District events (as set forth elsewhere in the Skantarian). We had goodly attendance, including some returning snowbirds, and the Sherwood provided yeoman service as usual. I hope you all enjoy the beginning of spring and watch some exceptional basketball between now and next Thursday! See you then!

SHELTER BOX - 2017-18 DISTRICT MATCHING GRANT
The Skaneateles Rotary Club, supported by the Skaneateles SR Rotary Club, has applied for a Rotary District Matching RF Grant, to fund six Shelter Boxes.
Each ShelterBox is tailored to a disaster but typically contains a disaster relief tent for a family, thermal blankets and groundsheets, water storage and purification equipment, solar lamps, cooking utensils, a basic tool kit, mosquito nets and a children’s activity pack.
Every item is durable, practical and brand new. The box itself is lightweight and waterproof and has been used for a variety of purposes in the past - from water and food storage containers to a cot for a newborn baby. A standard, packed box weighs 120 lbs. and has dimensions of 33" x 24" x 22". They are sealed and banded for transit and security.
Should the grant be approved for the District MG committee, the funds ($6,000) will be sent to ShelterBox USA.  Once the grant project has be closed out, in late 2017 or early 2018,  the District with reimburse the matching funds of $3,000.
To learn more about the Shelter Boxes, CLICK ON the picture above, or visit their website at: http://www.shelterboxusa.org/index.php
Your Rotary foundation contributions as work!    .... by Ward
LAST WEEK: .... by Bill Conole
The Beginnings -
Shelter Box Matching GrantWard Vuillemot briefed our members on the Rotary Grant he filled on behalf of our club. By partnering  with the Skaneateles Sunrise Club this grant will enable us to sponsor the purchase of 6 Shelter Boxes. These Shelter Boxes are designed to shelter & support families in disaster stricken areas. President Bill thanked Ward for preparing, coordinating & filling this most worthwhile Rotary Grant. (see Shelter Boxes above for more details)
Gifts of Gratitude - Ward announced that after nearly 20+ years of serving as our club's executive secretary Cheryl Silvestrini agreed to relieve Ward & become our club's executive secretary as of July 1. As a token of his gratitude, Ward presented Cheryl with 2 beautifully hand crafted pens.
District Conference & Assembly Jenny Doane, AG from Baldwinsville, made a brief presentation on our Rotary District Conference in Saratoga on 21-23 April (see notice and registration info below). This year's conference will feature many interesting seminars & several fun filed events. Jennie urged our members to attend. She also asked our members to consider attending the District Training Assembly in VVS High School on April 1st.                                                                                                    Auburn Public Theater - Bailey Normann, Foundation Director for the Auburn Public Theater [APT], opened her presentation by describing the history & mission of the APT. As it has evolved over the past 12 years APT has become a multifaceted community, cultural asset. The APT serves a theater presenting stage, music, music, comedy & community events. Bailey stressed that APT offers the community much more than just a theater. The APT's talented, lean staff aggressively pursues grans & fund raising to support it's endeavors. Bailey briefly outlined some of the APT's recent & coming events. for more info and schedules, go to their website at: http://auburnpublictheater.org
On April 27th the APT is sponsoring a major & timely community event in the Auburn High School. Former college & NBA basketball star Chris Herren will describe how he conquered his opiod addiction. By sponsoring this event the APT is taking a positive approach to fighting the opiod plague in our area. Bailey urged us to attend this event on the 27th. From Bailey's presentation, it is clear that the APT is a decided asset to the Auburn/Skaneateles Area.

50/50 - Won by guest, Jenny Doane. The elusive Queen of Spades remains concealed in the shrinking deck of cards
