Skaneateles Rotary Club Welcomes Linda Quick as a Member
Pledging to “go forth to promote positive change in the world,” Skaneateles Superintendent Linda Quick was inducted into the Skaneateles Rotary Club on Thursday, March 23. She was inducted by Amy Tormey, membership chairperson, and Bill Conole, club president. Quick is the fourth superintendent of Skaneateles Central Schools to join the local Rotary Club, which is intricately woven into our schools, our community and the world through service projects.
In Skaneateles schools, Rotary supports the very active Interact Club and sends selected students yearly to a leadership program (RYLA). The active Rotary Youth Exchange Program enriches our schools with students from around the world, while sending our own students abroad.

PRESIDENTS' CORNER... by Pres., Bill Conole
PAUL HARRIS - All of us know that Paul Harris founded Rotary. Next week our club hill honor 5 Paul Harris Fellows. Among our club’s many distinctions is that we have more Paul Harris Fellows per membership than any club in District 7150 & beyond. If you haven’t already please take a few minutes to read about Rotary’s founder Paul Harris. By participating in Rotary all of us are keeping Paul Harris’s legacy of “service above self” alive. So please join us next week for our “Paul Harris Night” in the Inn.
LAST WEEK... by Mary Giroux
The Beginnings - President Bill opened the meeting by welcoming members and guests to the American Legion Hall and introduced our host, Eric Amberge, Post Commander. Other guests were introduced and we then enjoyed a delicious meal prepared by Brad and Ann Cole. Thank you Brad and Ann! Dessert was delicious baclava which was specially baked by Roberta Williams' friend.
New Member Induction - Linda Quick, Superintendent of the Skaneateles Schools, was inducted as a new club member. Linda's sponsor is Amy Tormey. We wish Linda a warm welcome and look forward to her participation in the club.
The Program - Gard Lorey opened the program by reminding us that the Rotary Youth Exchange is a reciprocal program and that as our students are hosted by families overseas we need families in Skaneateles to host visiting youth.
Gard introduced his son Tyler who is currently a marketing manager at Johnston Paper in Auburn. Todd recounted his experiences and the positive impact that hosting two exchange students had on him. Bruno and Lucas remain friends to this day. Tyler also told us about his host family in Chile and how they made him feel part of the family during the highs and lows of his time in Chile.
Mike Lemp who is currently working as a product manager at Welch Allyn spoke about his experiences in Germany calling it "an incredible memorable experience." He spoke about the challenges that helped him grow and about how his host family provided empathy during the difficult times. Mike's family has also been a host family to three students. Christy Lemp, Mike's mother said that hosting "changed our family from the get go" establishing long term relationships. Don, Mike's father, said that hosting "changed family dynamics in a very positive manner." Members were asked to spread the word about our need for host families.
50-50 - was deferred til next week
Guests - We had lots: Nancy Oplinger and her daughter Liliana who will be going to Spain for the summer. Shane Rutledge who will be on his way to Belgium for the 2019/2020 year, Brenda Murphy and her daughter Gracie who is applying for the 2020/21 exchange year, Tyler Lorey, guest speaker and Gard's son. Han Gahyeon, our current exchange student from South Korea. Grace Baily who is going to Spain this summer. Kimberly Rossi and her daughter Ashlen who is also going to Spain this summer.
