LAST WEEK... by Mary Giroux
THE BEGINNINGS President Bill opened our meeting at the American Legion by introducing Eric Amberge, Commander. Eric welcomed our club and guests and gave us some background about the Legion which celebrated its 100th anniversary on March 15, 2019. Bill Conole also welcomed our guests which included members of SLA, the Monday evening book club and our guest speaker Peter Clark, his Mom Phyllis Clark and his brother Jay Clark.
DINNER was delicious chicken and biscuits prepared by Brad and Ann Cole. Thanks for a yummy meal!
THE PROGRAM - Tampa Bay Restoration
Peter Clark is a Skaneateles native whose interest in Marine Biology was ignited by time spent on Skaneateles Lake as a boy. Peter settled in the Tampa Bay area and founded the Tampa Bay Watch organization 26 years ago. The ecological health of Tampa Bay was quickly deteriorating as a result of development. Working with fishing clubs and local youth Tampa Bay Watch began restoration of the Bay. Projects included management of runoff and wastewater, seagrass recovery, restoration of oyster bars, coastal cleanup of debris and the removal of abandoned crab traps. Results are impressive with water quality and seagrass restored to 1950's levels. Focusing on natural solutions such as oyster bars and planting of seagrass results in sustainable solutions. Tampa Bay Watch has grown immensely over its 26 years with the latest expansion being a community education and resource center in St Petersburg. Many thanks to Peter for his great work and resolve to restore the Bay.

ShelterBox
ShelterBox is an international disaster relief charity that provides temporary shelter and life saving supplies to displaced families. Each ShelterBox typically contains a tent designed to withstand extreme weather conditions, water purification kit, blankets, tools, and other necessities to help a family survive after a disaster. The contents of a ShelterBox are tailored to the nature and location of the disaster.
The Skaneateles Rotary club and a few of its members have made contributions to the effort in the past. This week, the Skaneateles Rotary Club and the Skaneateles High School Interact club join ranks to sponsor an additional ShelterBox.

DID YOU KNOW ? Lemons contain more sugar than strawberries.
WHAT's in a WORD?
Kakorrhaphiophobia. This fancy and smart-sounding word means nothing else but a fear of failure. You know, not just a concern that something will go wrong, but a panic fear to start doing something and fail.
