So Close: To Ending Polio and Reaching Our Goal ... by Bill Buterbaugh
Congratulations, everyone. Thanks to your early response and very generous donations, we easily reached our club’s 2014-2015 goal for contributions to The Rotary Foundation. And as a result, we have spared you the weekly or monthly reminders to support both the foundation and our club in this manner. To date, our annual giving is $10,235 or 168% of our $6,100 goal.
However, we are close to, but have not yet reached, our Polio Plus goal of $2,000 for the year ending on June 30, 2015. With $1,700 for Polio Plus, we are at 85% of the goal; needing just $300 to make this milestone as well. So if you have not yet been among our club’s members contributing to either The Rotary Foundation or Polio Plus for this year, please consider doing so before June 30. Or if you have already contributed, but would like to help us ensure we make the Polio Plus goal, we will certainly welcome your additional contribution toward ending polio worldwide. As we mentioned at the start of this year, we’re “So Close…”
Please send your contributions to Bill Buterbaugh with your check made out to Polio Plus or The Rotary Foundation, whichever you prefer to designate. Thank you for being a part of the Skaneateles Rotary Club’s “Every Member, Every Year” effort.
PROPOSED MEMBER NOTICE:Mary Giroux, sponsored by Bill Conole and Alice Purdy, sponsored by Robin Jowaisas, membership applications have been submitted and approved at the May 14th BOD meeting by Membership Chair, Amy Tormey. Mary's classification is: "Human Resource Management" and Alice's classification is "Financial Analyst". Mary resides at 3910 W. Seneca Tpk. and Alice resides at 1721 Shady Bend Lane. If there are no objections made to the Club Secretary, in writing, within 10 day of this notice, and they received Rotary Information, they will be inducted into our membership on, or following, our meeting of June 4th, 2015.

Our Program: Everyone welcomed Jack Emmer back. Jack had a long stay in Florida & has been traveling extensively. 50-50-won by Duane Weaver---Robin Jowaisas begun his presentation by announcing that after heading up our Father’s Day Pancake Breakfast for the past 12 years he is resigning after this year to turn this project over to another Rotarian. Everyone applauded Robin & congratulated him for his excellent leadership over the past 12 years. Robin kicked off this year’s ticket sales by recapping last year’s Pancake Breakfast earnings of almost $14,000. This is the club’s major annual fundraiser, so every member needs to pitch in & fully support our Pancake Breakfast by selling tickets, by lining up volunteers & by helping out with set up & operation of this large undertaking. After reviewing last year’s results Robin reviewed the work schedule & the key areas of responsibility for the breakfast. Robin described the logistics & labor necessary to stage & to successfully carry out the breakfast. Every year more than 150 volunteers in addition to all of the members of our club are needed to staff the breakfast.
John Moran followed Robin by first giving everyone tips on how best to sell breakfast tickets. Both Robin & John stressed how critical ticket pre-sales are to the success of the breakfast. Presale of tickets usually account for more than 80% of the revenue we earn for the breakfast. John saluted Chuck O’Neil for leading the club in ticket sales last year with more than 70 tickets sold. Before John distributed 25 tickets to every club member John emphasized again how critical it is that every member sell at least 25 tickets.
With everyone’s cooperation & participation this year’s Pancake Breakfast is sure to be as successful as all of our previous breakfasts.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING SUMMARY NOTES

Your BOD directors met last week on May 14 with the following items discussed and actions taken,.
Pancake Break Review & Chairmanship - Robin Jowaisas reviewed the progress to date of this year's breakfast. Additionally, Robin has asked to be relieved of the Chairmanship of the Pancake Breakfast committee at the end of the year. He offered to train and mentor the incoming chair, that is to be selected by the incoming club leadership. Robin has chaired this event for 12 years, we owe him a great deal of thanks for his superb leadership over the years.
Shelter Boxes - Ward presented the Shelter Box project as a possible international project challenge.
RF Giving Summary - was presented by Ward. We have an EXCELLENT year of RF Giving. See the separate summary in this newsletter.
Youth Exchange - Two proposals were considered: Cell phones for the students for local emergency communications. Jim McQuiggan will research and have a proposal for the next meeting. Additionally, a one time stipend for graduation and other end of year expenses was proposed, voted upon and accepted.
Paul Harris Fellow - A committee has be organized to select a PHF recipient from within our local community.
Roses for the Living - A project that publicly honors a community member for their outstanding service. Bill Conole will organize this effort over the next few months.
Community Service Chair - Peter Adams has tendered his resignation as the Community Service Char and the club leadership will find another Rotarian to fill the position for the coming Rotary year.
Rotary Scholarship - The club is working with the HS on a selection for this year's recipient.

SAVE THE DATE - While the annual Fathers Day Pancake Breakfast is still a long ways away, it is time to save the date in our calendars. Fathers Day this year is June 21 so please note that date in your calendar as well as the Friday AM and Saturday AM before for set-up and the Monday AM afterwards for tear down. This is our biggest fund raising event of the year and we need every Rotarian to participate to insure it’s success. ... Robin

2015-16 Skaneateles Rotary Youth Exchange - The 2015-16 Rotary Youth Exchange students have been selected and will be departing this summer for a year as exchange students abroad. They are: Sofia Darovskikh, going to Finland, and Zach Driscoll going to Germany. We congratulate them upon their selections and wish them all the best on their "adventure of a lifetime".
