The Program - A view into COVID Vaccines by John Gilly President Dave introduced our speaker, John Gilly, President of the Skaneateles Sunrise Rotary Club. John is a Phd Immunologist/Vaccinologist & for the past forty years has worked on developing vaccines in the US, Europe & China. John’s first slide showed the “3 Types of Coronavirus Vaccines”. These vaccines were developed using three technologies: 1 Protein Base, 2 Viral Vector, 3 mRNA. John noted that vaccinologists were fortunate to have had recent experience dealing with two significant viral out breaks, SARs (Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus) in 2002-2003 & MERs (Middle East respiratory Syndrome-related coronavirus) in 2012. The research knowledge gained dealing with Sars, Mers and other deceases was extremely beneficial to the rapid development of a vaccines for COVID 19. In January 2020, the Chinese published a genomic sequence code which facilitated the development of the protein based vaccines. John explained how these 3 types of vaccines were developed & how they differ. John’s 2nd slide “Central Dogma” showed how scientists used the genomic code to transfer DNA to RNA & used proteins to develop mRNA (m=messenger). Vacccinologists were able to refine &update this 1990’s technology for their COVID Vaccines. John’s 3rd slide showed the 3 major vaccines FDC approved, the vaccines awaiting approval & the major vaccines being used in Russia & elsewhere. John spoke to the merits & efficacy of the approved vaccines. Pfizer & Moderna vaccines are 95% effective in protecting people against COVID but require 2 shots & require storage in freezers. The Johnson & Johnson vaccine IS 66% effective but only requires one shot & only needs to be stored in refrigerators. John responded to several questions from our members. President Dave thanked John Gilly for increasing our knowledge about how the COVID Vaccines were developed & about why & how these vaccines are so critically efficacious.
