PRESIDENTS' CORNER... by co-Pres., Mary
Hello Everyone, We had a great Zoom club meeting last week, April 16th. It was good to see everyone.
Discussions were lively and centered around fundraising and service ideas during this time of COVID-19. The following were proposed and all are great ideas:
Bottle and can drive - was suggested by Suzette G. Suzette has experience with this and is going to get some more detail. It would entail some publicity and having a drop off site for cans and bottles. Suzette will gather additional info.
Federal Relief Checks - Robin J. suggested we couple our announcement of the Pancake Breakfast cancellation with a suggestion that people may want to donate part or all of their federal relief checks if they are not truly in need of the funds. Lori R, Bill B and Ed E will get together on wording for our letter to the newspaper about the breakfast.
Raffle - Lee B. suggested a raffle which could raise significant funds. Lee is working on framing this project in a way that local businesses may benefit also.
Food Drive - Ward V. suggested a food drive by the club with the items being given to the food pantry which is currently supporting many many families in the area. Ward's idea was coupled with the bottle/can drive idea with the suggestion that the American Legion be a drop off point for food donations and bottles and cans. Bill Conole is going to check with the American Legion on this and Lori R is going to work on a PR piece.
It was great to have participation and enthusiasm from everyone. Let's keep the momentum going and help our friends and neighbors through this time! See you this Thursday at 6:30 on Zoom!
Be well and be safe .... Mary
Janet Caldwell, wife of SRC Past President Gary Caldwell, passed away.
Our condolences go out to Gary Caldwell and family, in the passing of Janet Caldwell, on April 23rd, following a long illness. Janet will be interned in Dubois, Pa., which was her original home. Janet participated in many Rotary projects along side of Rotarian Gary, who actively served in Skaneateles & Owego Rotary Clubs for 35 years and was president of the Skaneateles club in 1986-87. We will pass on additional information as it becomes available. In the mean time, Gary's address is: 3312 Stone Manor Circle, Chester, Va.
Dale Zabel Needs Your
Prayers and Thoughts
Please include Dale Zabel (Past SRC member) in your prayers thoughts. Dale's roommate in the nursing facility of Homestead Village, Lancaster, Pa., was diagnosed positive this morning with COVID-19 this past Friday. Several others in the facility have also contracted the virus, so the seriousness of this disease is extremely real for Dale and for Louise who lives in their apartment in the some senior complex. Their address is: 1866 Villa Court, Lower Unit, Lancaster, PA 17602
The Skaneateles Central School District, in conjunction with support from our community members, the Skaneateles Ecumenical Food Pantry, and Skaneateles Outreach, is offering meals to anyone who needs them in the difficult weeks ahead. Breakfast and lunch are available to any family, regardless of income, who needs assistance at this time.
Our kitchen will be open to prepare meals for our community over the next few weeks. You do not need to have children in the school system, and you do not need submit any financial paperwork. These are unsettling times, and we, along with the generous support of our community, will be extending our table to all of our families.
This is a great Service project to offer help, if you are able.CLICK HERE to learn more and to make contact with the program.
Baltimore Woods Creates New Virtual Content
...... info provided by Rotarian Dale & Stacy Drake
The staff at Baltimore Woods has created new virtual contact and activities to keep the local community connected to nature. They have added lots of interesting videos and link for all ages, whether you are spending more time indoors, outdoors, or both. There is a new "Ask a Naturalist" Q&A section.
They are launching our second virtual program this Saturday, April 25th at 12pm and running through next Saturday, May 2nd. It's free for the community to view, and it's a really fascinating tour with a naturalist of the spring amphibian migration that we typically do as a face-to-face program each year. The video is 40 minutes long.CLICK HERE to sign up.
