TRAVELS WITH DISTRICT GOVERNOR MARV JOSLYN—Over the past few weeks I’ve visited six nearby Rotary Clubs. During these club visits DG Marv emphasized the following concerns 1-MEMBERSHIP - This is a critical concern today for all Rotarians. Marv recommends that Rotarians: A - “ask” friends & associates to join Rotary. Tell prospective members about how your Rotary Club is serving our community & how fulfilling participating in Rotary is. B - Invite prospective members to attend a meeting. C - When a new member joins engage the new member in club activities as soon as possible. In many Rotary clubs today, the average age of members is rising. Attracting younger members, in today’s changing environment, is requiring clubs to become much more flexible. 2-DISTRICT 7150 PASSPORT TO SERVICE — DG Marv feels that by visiting our fellow clubs we will; A - Help you meet new people, B - Spark new ideas for projects, C - Create opportunities to collaborate & do more good, D - Open our minds to different formats for club meetings, E - Make us better Rotarians. Under DG Marv’s new Passport guidelines two Rotarians can attend any Rotary Club event—meeting, pancake breakfast etc. & have it qualify for a successful visit. 3-ACTS OF KINDNESS — DG Mar is encouraging clubs to plan & to implement acts of kindness. DG Marv defines an act of kindness as a selfless act, planned or spontaneous. Our club & our members are already performing many acts of kindness on a regular basis. To heighten our community’s awareness of Rotary & the great things we do DG Marv recommends that clubs better publicize out club’s many acts of kindness.

FOUR SKANTARIANS ATTENDED RLI
Four Skaneateles Rotarians participated in the RLI at Verona Saturday. Pres. Bill and Umesh attended the Graduate course, PE Doug participated in the Part I session, and Ward attended as faculty. The event was well organized with many Rotarians from across the district attending.
The next opportunity to attend an RLI will be Saturday, Nov. 3rd at the Palmyra-Madedon Sr. High School. It's a great opportunity to increase your knowledge and opportunities to the world of Rotary, and to network and share ideas with Rotarians from other clubs and districts. CHILDREN'S BOOKS GLEANED ... by Ward
Bookleggers Ward & Chuck O, gleaned several cartons children's books from the State Street School this week for CNY Books for the World project.. We also picked up a few cartons of books from Gard's dental office's collection box. This puts on track of filling the recently approved pallet this school year. BFTW Rock!

RLI - President Bill, President Elect Doug and Umesh will head out to Verona early Saturday morning to attend the RLI session. Anyone else interested should contact Bill Conole.
Sept 27 meeting - Congressional candidate Dana Balter will be at our meeting. Please let President Bill know if you will be attending and any guests you will bring so that we can give a headcount to The Sherwood.
Syracuse Orange - Jim Boeheim will be speaking at the Dewitt Club's October 1st meeting. President Bill has the details if you are interested.
Polio Day - October 24th, the birthdate of Jonas Salk, is World Polio Day. We'll kick off our annual giving campaign at our October 25th meeting.
Grant - The 2018/2019 grant will be presented to the YMCA on October 1st. Thanks to Kathy Powell for all of her hard work on this!
The Program - Chuck Williams - Glass cutting implements.
It is always amazing to find out what people do in their spare time. Chuck Williams, our long time fellow Rotarian, finds plenty to keep himself busy including fixing furniture, driving for Laker Limo, taking care of his house and cottage, and last of all, curating an impressive collection of glass cutting implements. The beginning of his collection was a bargain box at the end of an auction in Groton. This was the foundation for a 450 piece collection, many of which were impressively displayed at our meeting Thursday evening. Chuck talked about the history of glass cutting and how the process evolved to today's flat glass for windows. Glass cutters have also been a helpful tool for thieves, however one must be careful not to cut ones self and leave DNA evidence behind. Chuck proudly displayed his award from the Early American Industries Association for his impressive display of tools. Chuck ended his informative and often humorous presentation saying "If it weren't for glasscutters and Venetians it would have been curtains for all of us!" Thank you Chuck for a great presentation.
