There Goes Another Pallet of BOOKS
..... to the children of the world. .... by Ward
Tuesday, Mar. 2nd, four Skaneateles Rotarians (Terry, Jason, Jay & Ward) with the help of Cheryl Perkins of the State Street School (BookLagers all), packed children’s library books to combine with books from the Middle School that were packed last Fall. Together, the books gleaned from both schools completed a full pallet of books destined for Rotarian Books for the World Distribution Centers in needy parts of our world. This pallet of books, when combined with the previous 43 from the Skaneateles area since the inception of the project in 2008 have filled almost 2 sea containers of gently used books to be read and loved again by children of the world. Rotarians working together with their communities to help create a better, peaceful world.
LAST WEEK- Mar 5th, 2021 ... by Mary
Membership/Attendance: 52 Active members 14 attending
Guests: Frank Moses, guest speaker
The Beginnings - Pres-elect Terry opened the meeting by welcoming our guest, Frank Moses, Director of the Skaneateles Lake Association and Dwight Perry. Terry reminded us of the Village elections on March 16th. Voting is at the firehouse from noon to nine. Absentee ballots may be obtained from the Village office by March 9. We recited the Pledge of Allegiance.
The Program - Rosemary introduced our guest speaker Frank Moses, Director of the Skaneateles Lake Association. Frank has a vast background in conservation and preservation of our natural resources, He grew up in Spafford and spent his youth on both Skaneateles and Otisco Lake, The mission of SLA is to protect and preserve the water quality of our lake. The Board of SLA is comprised of many local individuals who bring great expertise and talent to the organization. SLA is 50 years old and as issues have arisen (milfoil management, zebra mussels and harmful algae blooms to name a few) SLA has aggressively tackled them. SLA works with the DEC, a cadre of community volunteers, governmental agencies and various watershed advisors. The process is ever changing and involves knowing what nutrients are in the lake using tools such as sampling of water, analyzing sediment plumes after storms, satellite imagery and aquatic plant analysis. Some of the recent projects of SLA include the Dowling Creek and Willow Brook Stabilization Projects. Boat launch activity is also monitored to educate boaters about invasive species that may be attached to their vessels. SLA is currently working on the Robert G. Werner Research and Education Boat which should be launched this spring. Frank answered a number of questions from members. Skaneateles is fortunate to have Frank at the helm of SLA. Our thanks to Frank and all of those that work with SLA to preserve our gem of a lake.
