SHARING COATS with those in need
Thanksgiving and cold weather is on the way and there is a need in our community share with those in need; warm coats, mittens and gloves (hats if donated should be new). Cathy & Doug are working with the Skaneateles Outreach to distributed the donated winter wear. Please bring your donations to a meeting or deliver to at the & Doug home. The collection will end on November 14th, in time for a pre-Thanksgiving distribution. What a great way to share our sprint of Thanksgiving.

Annual Christmas Fundraiser, Dec. 12th

The Skaneateles Rotary Club’s Annual Christmas Fundraiser will be held on Thursday, December 12th, at the Skaneateles Country Club. We will begin with a happy hour at 6 p.m. followed by a family-style turkey dinner at 7 pm. Purchase your tickets through Amy Tormey @ $30 each. Don’t Forget…The organizing committee needs our Rotarians’ support in securing raffle prizes. The goal is to have at least 50% of attendees win a prize. Rotary Day at the United Nations - Nov 9, 2019
Today, the number of refugees worldwide is the highest since World War II. Throughout Rotary’s 75-year history with the United Nations– and beyond– Rotarians have helped people displaced by war, famine, and climate. However, Refugees are not just beneficiaries of international assistance; many have under– or un-utilized– skills to be a resource in the communities in which they settle. This November, join Rotary in recognizing People of Action who are devising community-based solutions to the global refugee crisis.
Through a series of flash talks, engaging breakouts and plenary speeches, this event offers expansive opportunities for the public to learn about and support projects in refugee settlements and beyond. Hear first-hand experiences of resettled refugees, humanitarian actors and individuals creating community-based solutions that empower refugees, leverage their talents, and connect them to opportunities. PRESIDENTS' CORNER... by Pres., Doug Powell
It was a nice evening to honor what rotary has done to eradicate Polio on world Polio Day. We are literally that close! John Gilley from the Sunrise Rotary Club gave a nice presentation on the Polio Virus. We were truly impressed with his breadth of knowledge and skills for making a difficult topic understandable for a mostly lay audience. Great job!
More impressive was the fact that Polio eradication has had a lot more great by-products: the first comprehensive map of Nigeria, an infra-structure to work from to help limit the Ebola outbreak, and others. So, the intention of eradicating Polio keeps yielding benefits.
Today is also Navy Day. Let’s honor all our current and past naval enlistees and officers. Our great Navy has been the decisive difference in keeping the world peace. Bravo.
On a local note, Cathy and I will undertake the gently worn coat, gloves, and boots drive. Hats, if donated should be new. We will collect at our house at any time or at the Nov 14 meeting. The donated goods will be distributed through the Skaneateles Outreach who will provide a rack for those in need.
Reminder, there is no meeting this Halloween. Go to the Haunted Hallways and give a hand.

Member Honored on World Polio Day - President Doug announced that our own Ward Vuillemot was honored by the Mayor of Syracuse with the “Above and Beyond” Award of Excellence for his efforts in Polio eradication through his PolioStopper project that raised $23,200 for PolioPlus. Haunter Hallways - Brad McLennan told the Club that Haunted Hallways will take place Thursday, October 31st, at the Skaneateles High School. 5:00 p.m.-6 p.m. is set-up and decorating, and the festivities are 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. Rotary provides cider and donuts. Brad said that volunteers between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. would be ideal. Also, Karen Price said they need 6-8 carved pumpkins for the tables.
Annual Christmas Fundraiser - Cheryl reminded the Club that the Christmas Fundraiser is on Thursday, December 12th, at the Skaneateles Country Club. Tickets are $30 each. You can contact Amy Tormey (amy.a.tormey@gmail.com) for tickets, and she encourages buying tables of 8 or 10. Cheryl asked all Rotarians to donate a gift or two for the raffle that evening.
Youth Exchange - John O’Sullivan announced that he is working with the outbound exchange students and thanked Tyler Lorey for his participation.
No-Meeting October 31st - President Doug reminded members that there is NO meeting next week due to the Halloween festivities. Please give a hand with the Haunted Halls (see note above)
Happy Dollars for Polio eradication - Bill Buterbaugh collected Happy Dollars for Polio Plus.
Banners - President Doug asked the group if anyone is willing to store the Rotary banners. Jay Steth stepped forward to volunteer.

President Doug Powell introduced John Gilly, member of the Skaneateles Sunrise Rotary Club, is a researcher who started out by making influenza vaccines. He spoke on “Poliovirus, Disease and Eradication”. He explained what Polio is, the lifecycle of Polio, and prevention – the Polio vaccine. Rotary formed a committee in 1978 called the Health, Hunger and Humanity Committee. One of their primary goal was to eradicate Polio. An excellent, comprehensive and informative presentation.
