PRESIDENTS' CORNER ... by Pres., Bill Conole
BOYS STATE: Last evening before Packy Taylor introduced the 2018 Boys State SCHS Candidate our Rotary Club sponsored, he thanked our club form supporting Boys State & for sponsoring candidates from SCHS. Packy stressed that our clubs support is crucial in enabling young men from Skaneateles to participate in Boys State. Another strong example of how our club contributes to the vitality of our community. 2019 SKANEATELES WINTERFEST: For more than a decade our sister club the Skaneateles Sunrise Rotary Club has conducted very successful “Winterfests” in the last weekend of January. In 2003 Ward Vuillemot was one of the co-founders of the Sunrise Club. Since it’s founding our clubs have worked together on our clubs major fundraising efforts like our annual pancake breakfast, our Christmas Fundraising Dinner & on their Winterfest. So, I want to take this opportunity to encourage our members to uphold our clubs’ tradition of mutual support by volunteering to assist the Sunrise club on Friday & Saturday January 25 & 26. Volunteering also gives you the opportunity to fully participate in Winterfest’s “Taste of Skaneateles, the Ice Carving Demonstrations & to observe the always exciting Polar Plunge.
DID YOU KNOW THAT?
A group of frogs is called an army. A group of rhinos is called a crash. A group of kangaroos is called a mob. A group of whales is called a pod. A group of geese is called a gaggle. A group of owls is called a parliament..... A group of Skaneateles Rotarians is called Skantarians.
LAST WEEK... by Mary Giroux
The Beginnings
Winterfest - John Paddock brought us up to date on Winterfest activities including ice sculptures, polar plunge (rumored that Danny Roche may participate......Danny denies), Scavenger Hunt and Food Tastings. The volunteer sign up was circulated. Please help if you can.
Grant update -John also let us know that the morning club would participate in our 2019/2020 grant request for ClearPath for Veterans.
Valentine's Day - President Bill asked for ideas for our meeting on February 14th as The Sherwood is not available. Also meeting sites are needed for March 14 and 28.
Women's Day event- Amy Tormey and committee are in the process of planning an event for March 7......stay tuned for more information.
The Program - President Bill introduced Packy Taylor who thanked our club for continued support of the annual Boy's State program. The program, held at SUNY Morrisville, provides an opportunity for young men to experience leadership and good citizenship through mock elections and governmental processes. Packy introduced Patrick Hackler, this year's participant in the program. Patrick thanked our club for sponsoring his participation saying that the experience was well worth giving up his cell phone and friends for a week. He spoke about his typical day (rise and shine at 5:30 a.m.) and about the daily challenges given to participants by Marines. In Patrick's words Boy's State was "the best experience"! We wish Patrick well as he ventures off to Yale for the next chapter of his life.
The Ending - President Bill urged everyone to take a look at the District Newsletter which contains an article about our December fundraising efforts.
200 Club - Lucky winners of $50 apiece were Sue Moran (John's better half) and Chuck O'Neil.
50-50 - won by Dave Lee and the deck continues to shrink.
Guests - John Paddock, Packy Taylor, Patrick Hackler and Terry McCormick a fellow Rotarian from Alexandria, Va. who is in the area visiting his Mom
Attendance - 20 at 39%
Current Membership - 52

200 Club Fundraiser... by Cheryl
It may not be as exciting as cracking eggs or flipping pancakes, but the “200 Club” Raffle is an easy way to raise money to benefit community and youth groups. Here’s how it works: we sell 200 tickets at $20 each for a total of $4,000. We give away $1250 in prizes which leaves us with $2750 to use for worthy causes.
We will sell tickets starting 10/18/18. Two $50 prizes will be drawn at our Club Meetings on 1/3, 1/10, 1/24, 1/31 & 2/7. On 2/7, we will draw a $250 winner, as well as the $500 Grand Prize winner. Also, all weekly winners will be put back into the raffle and be eligible for the Grand Prize!
We need to sell all 200 tickets for this raffle to work as outlined, so please consider selling at least 5 tickets to family, friends, co-workers, etc. – and don’t forget to buy your own! Cheryl will have tickets available at all weekly meetings. If paying by check, please make payable to Skaneateles Rotary Foundation. Be sure the contact information is completed on the ticket and give that portion of the ticket to Cheryl along with ticket money/checks. Thank you and good luck to everyone!
