HANDS-ON SERVICE OPPORTUNITY  ... by Ward
Tuesday, June 5th, Skantarians are going out to Clear Path for Veterans to assembly two picnic tables, which we are funding.  This is great opportunity to see the Clear Path site while enjoying working with fellow Rotarians in serving our veterans.  We plan on car pooling from Skaneateles at 9 AM and will return in the early afternoon.  We will lunch on-site.  If you are interested in joining us, please contact Ward at 247-4449 or wardtv37@mac.com  More details on tools required (if any) to follow.

PRESIDENTS' CORNER ... by Pres., Mary Giroux
We had a great talk by Mitch Maniccia from the Seward House about William Seward and his effect on US history.  Thank you Tim Donovan for arranging for Mitch to speak.  And, as we approach the upcoming Memorial Day weekend let us all remember all those who served for the freedoms we enjoy today.
In the spirit of giving back, members of our club will be building picnic tables at Clearpath for Veterans on Tuesday June 5th in the morning.  If you would like to help please let Ward know.
See you next Thursday and I hope your week goes well.

THE PROGRAM - Seward House, Mitch Maniccia
Tim Donovan introduced our speaker Mitch Maniccia. For the past 3 years Mitch has served as the Facilities Manager for the Seward House. After graduating from the University of Albany in 2104 Mitch came to the Seward House as an intern. Mitch grew up in Oswego & is currently a member of the Auburn Rotary Club.
Mitch opened his talk by posing the question “who was William Seward”. Mitch proceeded to answer this question by explaining William Seward’s amazing intellectual capacity & how he used his intellectual gifts to serve New York State & our young nation. After graduating from Union College, Phi Beta Kappa, Seward moved to the then bustling city of Auburn to serve as the legal clerk to the prominent Judge Miller. While serving Judge Miller, Seward courted & married the Judge’s daughter Frances. The Seward Mansion was built in 1816 by Judge Miller. Seward served as New York State Governor from 1839-1843. In 1849 Seward was elected to the US Senate where he quickly became one of the most respected Senators. When Seward was edged out for the Presidency by Abraham Lincoln, he readily agreed to serve his rival President Lincoln as the Secretary of State during our tumultuous Civil War. Seward was assassinated & grievously wounded on the same night that President Lincoln was killed.
Throughout his life Seward had maintained a strong vision of America’s greatness. As Secretary of State under President Johnson, Seward acted on this belief by purchasing Alaska from Russia for $7,000,000 or 2 cents an acre. Initially the Alaska purchase was derided as Seward’s Folly & Seward’s Ice Box. Now Alaska is part of Seward’s immense legacy to our nation. Down through the years the Seward family kept Seward’s legacy intact by carefully preserving almost all of William Seward’s papers, pictures, & belongings in the Seward Mansion.
Mitch invited members to visit the Seward Mansion & to become a supporter of this unique museum. Mitch responded to several questions from members. Bill Conole complimented Mitch for his outstanding presentation on William Seward & the Seward Mansion.
50/50 - Was won by Chuck O'Neill. By drawing the king of spades, Chuck just missed drawing the elusive queen of spades
