PRESIDENTS' CORNER... by Pres., Bill Conole
NEXT WEEK-PACK TO THE LEGION - The Sherwood asked to seek another venue form our May 23rdmeeting. We are meeting in the Legion “Upper Room” which sounds almost biblical. Our program will feature our Rotary Youth Exchange Program. We may also be inducting a new member. The American Legion & our Skaneateles Legion Post 239 are celebrating their centennial anniversary. In 1919 about 45 WW1 veterans met on the site of the Skaneateles Country Club for it’s first meeting. There is an iconic picture of these stalwart veterans in the Legion.
TRIBUTE TO UMESH - President Elect Doug Powell rose on Thursday evening to give a warm tribute to our departing Rotarian Dr Umesh Patil. Umesh served ably as our club president from 2004-2005. For the past twenty years Umesh has generously shred his many gifts with our members. When a member had a medical concern Umesh was always available to give them medical advice. Many members have stories of receiving a visit from Umesh when they were recuperating from surgery or a hospital stay. Umesh had an infectious laugh & a gentle, soothing disposition. Farewell Umesh, you will be missed.

Farewell to Umesh - Bill and all of the club members wished Umesh Patil a fond farewell with a standing ovation. We shall all miss Umesh's kindness. He is moving to Princeton NJ.
THE PROGRAM - Erik Osborne, a Life of Achievement.
Erik Osborne has had a long and interesting life with many accomplishments. He spoke of his family history including a great grandfather that started a successful farm machinery business in Auburn and Martha Wright a suffragette and abolitionist who was also Lucretia Mott's sister. Erik's grandfather bought the Auburn Bulletin where Erik went to work after being discharged from the Army, serving during World War II. His starting pay was $19 a week. After leaving the newspaper business Erik was on the ground floor of the developing cable TV business as the founder of Auburn Cablevision. Upon retirement Erik devoted his time and talents to the Osborne Association, an organization founded by his father to help reform the prison system. Erik holds world records in competitive rowing and has also written three books: "The Adventures of Tilly". "Murder on the Hill", and "Taking Fortune's Tide". Listening to Erik makes us think about how much can be done in a lifetime!

WHAT's in a WORD? Cozen - to gain by deceit; to cheat; to defraud.
But let us not cheat and cozen ourselves into idleness and apathy by reflecting and rejoicing over what has been done. from "Archaeological Essays, Vol. 1" ...... by James Y. Simpson, MD, 1811 - 1870
