THREE MEMBERS INDUCTED - On March 5th we inducted 3 new members into our club.
Mary Popovich, a business owner, former educator, and active community member was proposed by Amy Tormey. Mary also works at Seymour Library in Auburn two days a week. Mary is a summer resident of TI Park in the 1000 Islands.
Kathy Crelot, a retired credit union professional and retired Chief Warrant Officer in the Navy/Reserves, was proposed by Noel Gettman. Kathy was previously part of the Geneva Rotary Club.
Suzette Grinnals, a retired special education teacher, was proposed by her sister, Roberta Williams, a past president of our club. Their father has been in the Chittenango Rotary Club for 47 years and served as president twice. Peter Adams stood as Suzette’s sponsor at the induction in place of Roberta Williams, who is currently at her home in Greece.
We also had three potential members in attendance at what was a very eventful meeting.

THIS WEEK: International Women's Day Event. Our guest speaker is Jill. S. Tietjen, P.E., an electrical engineer, author, and “technical expert and authority on trailblazing American women.”Jill is the CEO of The National Women’s Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls and co-author of the bestselling book, “Her Story: A Timeline of the Women Who Changed America.”

New Members - It was a busy eventful meeting with an official induction of 3 new club members, 4 prospective members & 4 guests, [see above].
Medical Equipment for John Dau Clinic - President Cheryl asked Ward to show our members & guests some of the recently arrived medical equipment that our club purchased through a Rotary Grant for Sudan. Guest Jack Howard thanked our club for their generosity & gave a brief update on conditions in Sudan. [see below]
Our Speaker - Susan Major, a Skaneateles resident Susan Major, opened her presentation by noting that she wrote her book, “Joyful Journeys : Sacred Pauses with God”, while going through her own battle against breast cancer. From the excerpts Susan read from her book it is clear that, through her book, she is delivering a message of hope & inspiration to people experiencing personal struggles. Susan expressed gratitude for the way people in the greater Skaneateles community helped her family with meals & childcare & financial assistance. Currently Susan is teaching in CBA. In addition to this, she is helping a young CBA student with his battle against cancer. By her example & with her book Susan wants to give people a sense of hope in their daily lives. Susan said” she wants people to realize that even when we are struggling with major challenges & things look like obstacles, we can still experience joy.” Susan closed on a very positive note by telling our club that she has been cancer free for 5 years.

MEDICAL EQUIPMENT DONATED TO JOHN DAU CLINIC - The medical equipment, purchased through a RF District matching grant, was presented to Jack Howard, of the John Dau Foundation, at our meeting last week. The equipment (microscope, centrifuge and oxygen regenerator) is destined for the John Daw Clinic in South Sudan, and are replacements for some of the medical equipment either stolen or destroyed during the civil unrest in the region last year.

WINTER FUN WITH YE STUDENTS - On Saturday, March 7th, Peter Adams took our three exchange students skiing at Song Mountain.
Peter, a senior ski patroller, organized the day with free rental equipment and a lesson for the students. Kata (Finland) skied, while Marcus (Brazil) and Bartek (Poland) learned to snowboard. They all did really well on the slopes and had a very enjoyable day!
Peter was assisted by Chuck Lewis, another ski patroller at Song, his wife Nancy, and Rotarian Amy Tormey.
Thank you Peter for giving the students a special memory of winter fun in upstate NY!

BOARD OF DIRECTOR MEETING SUMMARY NOTES of Mar 05, 2015
Your BOD directors met last week on Mar 5th with the following items discussed and motions passed.
District Matching Grant - A resolution was passed to submit a joint SRC/SRRC 2015-16 District MG to support the September Honor Flight with $6,000. ($2,000 from SRC, $1,000 from SRRC with $3,000 matching District RF funds).
Community Center Basketball Court Equipment - A resolution was passed to fund the equipping of a basketball court with a pledge of $8,000 over a three year period.
2014-15 District Grant - Medical supplies for So. Sudan clinic is nearing completion with the equipment to be transferred to the John Dau Foundation within the next week.
Easter Egg Hunt - A contribution was approved for the Annual Easter Egg Hunt.
After the Ball - A contribution to the After the Ball graduation party was approved.
Women's Day Dinner & Celebration - Final plans & reservations were reviewed. Tis sold out with 88 people signed up. It promises to be a great success.
Skantarian Readership - Less than 50% of our membership are opening the Skantarian Newsletters emailed to them. Should we be concerned? If so, how might we increase the readership?
Attendance - issues were discussed as a summary report shows only a limited number of members participating in weekly support of the club.

Auburn Rotary Club 100th Anniversary - The Auburn Rotary Club is to celebrate its 100th Anniversay on Sunday, April 12th. Of note - Auburn RC sponsored the Skaneateles RC in 1927, so that this a special occasion for Skantarians as well.
