THE BEGINNINGS:

The goal is to have commitments from sponsors by May1st.
Women’s Day Dinner-Amy Tormey reviewed plans for this year’s  Women’s day Dinner scheduled next week in the Welch Allyn Lodge. Amy asked members who can not attend to please consider sponsoring a student or a young teacher so they can attend this inspiring evening. Amy applauded Jean Sardino for being the first member to step forward & sponsor a student. Please contact Amy Tormey if you are willing to donate to this event by sponsoring a student. Amy also plans to tout Rotary in this event so members of our community can learn more about Rotary.

THE PROGRAM: Sandra DUPUIS of the Guadeloupe Rotary Club
In honor of our French Speaking guest from Guadeloupe, guest Bill Conole’s wife,Pat, delivered the invocation in French with a translation for us. Pat mentioned that our speaker, Sandra DUPIS, is the Director of four Sign Language programs in Guadeloupe, Martinique, Guyana & Paris. Bill Conole introduced Sandra by giving a brief overview of the history & geography of Guadeloupe. where Sandra is a member of the Guadeloupe Rotary Club. Sandra opened her presentation by noting that she was first introduced to Rotary when she was an exchange student in Skaneatleles in 1989-90. Sandra joined the Guadeloupe Rotary Club,  where she enthusiastically related how Rotary changed her life. When Sandra returned to Guadeloupe she decided to become a teacher & gained admission to the prestigious Sorbonne University in Paris. The Sorbonne’s curriculum for teachers required that students take a course in sign language. Sandra passionately embraced working with the deaf. After many years of training she was selected to become the director of four sign language schools
.    Sandra vividly described the joys of working with & instructing the hearing impaired. Sandra spoke very positively about her visit to Skaneateles High School. She & her 2 children Loic & Chole were tremendously impressed with how open & friendly the staff & students are. Sandra noted that in France schools tend to be austere. The large classes often make the French teachers less open to student’s questions.  Sandra feels that teachers with positive attitudes are better teachers. Sandra responded to many questions from our members. Bill Conole presented Sandra with our club banner, a cup & a Skaneateles T-Shirt. Sandra thanked our club for inviting her to speak & profusely praised Rotary for changing her life. Sandra presented the club with several copies of children’s books that she writes. Sandra gave Bill a bag of Guadeloupe sugar.
