PRESIDENTS' CORNER... by Pres., Bill Conole
ROTARY WEEK: This week I went to two events our club cosponsored & four rotary meetings
1 - On Saturday morning I represented our club at the 2019 Skaneateles Easter Egg Hunt in Clift Park. It was heartwarming to watch about 150 children running about “hunting” for eggs. Hilary & the other event coordinators thanked our club profusely for cosponsoring this children’s event.
2 - On Tuesday at noon I visited the Auburn Rotary Club. After their meeting Doug Powell, Bill Buterbaugh & I met with the SRC President Bob Edmunds & SRC Secretary Paul Barrus to discuss some of the innovative, flexible methods the SRC is employing to grow their club & to better connect with the community. I’ll ask Doug & Bill to share their impressions in the next club assembly on May 9th.
3 - On Tuesday evening I attended the Rotary Club of Marcellus’ 2019 Good Works Dinner in the Tuscarora Golf Course Clubhouse. This dinner honored two Marcellus citizens, Leon Plohocki (PH) & Bethany Woods for the “good works” they performed for the Marcellus Community & the students of the Marcellus Schools. During the dinner two new members were inducted into the club & scholarships were awarded to two Marcellus School students. This dinner was attended by more than fifty Rotarians, & friends of Rotary. Our club should consider conducting an award dinner like the Marcellus Club’s.
4 - On Tuesday night I went to the St James Master Series Lecture on Youth Sports. Our club was a cosponsor for this most interesting panel discussion of how youth sports & has changed in recent years.
5 - On Thursday AM I went to a Skaneateles Sunrise Rotary Club meeting. This meeting was only attended by a few members. Since Ward Vuillomot helped set this club up in 2002, our clubs have mutually supported each other. This year the Sunrise Club was the first club to join & to contribute $1500 for our club’s Multi Club Rotary Grant for Clear Path’s Dog to Vets Program.
6 - Home Thursday evening for an interesting program “Sleep in Heavenly Peace” where volunteers build beds for children in CNY. Dynamic speaker Scott McClurg invited members to join Scott & his volunteers in Marcellus Park on Saturday June 15th for “bed building bee”.
LAST WEEK... by Mary Giroux
THE BEGINNINGS - We shook things up a bit and had our program before dinner.
THE PROGRAM - Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP)
Cathy Powell introduced Scott McClurg. Scott is a retired Syracuse firefighter and also owns and operates a well known construction company. Scott spoke about his experience as a firefighter which ignited a passion to serve community members that are less fortunate and do not have basic necessities. Scott has put together a project to make 101 bunk beds for 202 children that do not have beds in the City of Syracuse. Even with this effort there are 409 beds that are needed. The project is under the auspices of the NY-Syracuse Chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP). SHP began in 2012 in Idaho and has spread to other locations throughout the US and on June 15th a build day is being held across the US. Scott has organized the build at Marcellus Park on June 15th and volunteers are needed to help build the 101 bunk beds. Shifts are from 8 to 11, 11 to 2 and 2 to 5. Although we are setting up for our pancake breakfast in the morning of the 15th this is a great project for club members to participate in later in the day. Bedding (sheets, pillowcases, mattress pads, comforters and blankets) are also needed. Any bedding items should be new. To volunteer for this project visit www.mcclurgteam.com/SHP and click on the VOLUNTEER link.

THE ENDING - Fellow Rotarian guests were introduced: Andy Stevens from the Cortland breakfast club who recently moved to Skaneateles and Terry McCormick, our good friend from Virginia. President Bill reported that the Easter Egg Hunt was a great success and that out club's support was greatly appreciated. Ralph Jurgenson will be on his way to Washington DC bright and early Saturday with Honor Flight. Congratulations to Ralph and thank you and all of our veterans for your service.
50-50 - won by Robin Jowaises but the Queen was not to be found in the full deck!
Guests - Scott McClurg, Andy Stevens and Terry McCormick
Attendance - 17 at 33% (53 members)
Sharing Rotary With New Members ... from; ABC's of Rotary
by, Cliff Dochterman RI Past President
Are you aware of the responsibility or obligation most Rotarians fail to perform? Paying their dues? Attending meetings? Contributing to the club's service fund? Participating in club events and projects? No--none of these!
Of all the obligations a person accepts when joining a Rotary club, the one in which most Rotarians fail is "sharing Rotary." The policies of Rotary International clearly affirm that every individual Rotarian has an "obligation to share Rotary with others and to help extend Rotary through proposing qualified persons for Rotary club membership." It is estimated that less than 30 percent of the members of most Rotary clubs have ever made the effort to propose a new member. Thus, in every club, there are many Rotarians who readily accept the pleasures of being a Rotarian without ever sharing that privilege with another qualified individual.
The Rotary policy on club membership states: "In order for a Rotary club to be fully relevant to its community and responsive to the needs of those in the community, it is important and necessary that the club include in its membership all fully qualified prospective members located within its territory. " One merely has to glance through the yellow pages of the local telephone directory to realize that most clubs have not invited qualified members of all businesses and professions into Rotary.
Only a Rotarian may propose a customer, neighbor, client, supplier, executive, relative, business associate, professional or other qualified person to join a Rotary club. Have you accepted your obligation to share Rotary? The procedures are very simple, and everyone must know at least one person who should belong to Rotary.
SAVE THE DATE(s) ... by Mary Giroux,Chair
Skaneateles Rotary Club's 51st annual Father’s Day Pancake Breakfast is June 16th.Please also mark your calendars, for Friday, June 14th AM and Saturday, June 15th AM for set-up, and Monday, June 17thAM for tear down. This makes 51 consecutive years holding our Club’s biggest fund raising event and we need every Rotarian to participate to insure its continued success. Please schedule to be in town that weekend to help out at this “fun filled” community event! This service project, which supports many worthy causes, only works if every Rotarian makes a full commitment. Thank you for your support.
