PRESIDENT'S CORNER ... by Prez Bill
Skantarians! Last week we had an outstanding presentation by Dr. Dayaprasad Kulkarni, who spoke about the charitable organization he founded and runs, Aarogya Seva. Dr. Kulkarni's practical approach in reacting to the needs of the most humble people all over the planet reflects the basic tenets of Rotary's mission to help our communities. Thank you to PP Bill Conole for arranging this opportunity.
I would also like to thank Brad McLennan for stepping up and skippering this year's Haunted Hallways cider & donuts effort and recognize Roy MacDonald, Dave Piper, Lee Bennet, et al, for pitching in. It was a great night. Well done!
This week we will meet at Johnny Angel's, usual time. If the venue allows (from a practical POV), I would ask the Chairs and committee leaders to be prepared to give a short talk about the state of affairs in their respective area of responsibilities.
Most important is that of the Christmas Fundraiser, which is fast approaching. I hope everyone gets a chance to hear what we are up to as a Club, consider how they can help in our efforts and enjoy the change of scenery. Thank you.
Annual Christmas Fund Raiser, December 1st
The Skaneateles Rotary Club’s annual Christmas fund raiser will be held on Thursday December 1st at the Skaneateles Country Club. We will begin with a happy hour at 6 PM followed by a family style turkey dinner at 7 PM. Tickets are $25. Contact Amy Tormeyat tormeyesl@verizon.netfor reservations.
Don't Forget - the organizing committee needs our Rotarian's support in coming up with raffle prizes. The goal is to have at least 50% of attendees win a prize. While local merchants and professionals will be canvassed again this year for prize donations, all Rotarians are also asked to donate prizes such as a bottle of wine, a gift card, etc. Please let Roy McDonald or David Piper know in advance of the event what you will be bringing in the way of a prize. Even if you can’t attend the event, please contribute a raffle prize.
Our Board of Directors approved a resolution, in July, that provided for a match of 50 PH contribution points, for the first 30 contributors to the RF Annual or Polio Eradication Fund, will receive a match of 50 PH contribution points. This match applies retroactively to contribution made as early as July 1, 2016. To date, 7 Rotarians have taken advantage of this offer, with 23 matches yet to be made.
TAKE ACTION and make your annual RF contribution now to be among those taking advantage of this option. Send or give your 2016/17 contributions to Bill Buterbaugh, or RF Chair for processing. Checks are to be made out to The Rotary Foundation. If the contribution is for Polio Eradication, please write "polio" in the memo portion of you check.
HALLOWEEN IN SKANEATELES... by Lori Ruhlman
Hundreds showed up for the combined Skaneateles Rotary and HS Interact Club Halloween event Monday night. Rotarians served cider and donuts while Interact Club students put on Haunted Hallways. These Rotarians in the picture plus others (i.e. Robin Jowasis and Dale Drake) were led by Brad McLennan. The Interact Club and the Rotary Club are grateful to State Street School and its staff for the use of that school over so many years. Karen Price, Interact Club advisor, said club members decided the high school could add new elements of excitement. In addition, it was easier for students and staff who didn’t have to transport five truck loads of decorations to Waterman from the High School.
Having the event in the high school is helping create more school wide enthusiasm, said Interact Club President Joe Benedict.
and ANOTHER SEMI TRUCK LOAD is on its way!... Ward CNY Books for the World is shipping another semi-truck load (26 pallets) of books to Rotarian BFTW in Houston Tx., to start their journey to Rotarian BFTW Distribution Centers around the world. These books have be gleaned by Rotarians in Districts 7150, 7170 and 7040 in Central New York State. I believe this is CNY BFTW's 27th load (40' sea-container load) to shipped to to the children of the world.. ROTARIANS WORKING TOGETHER TO MAKE A BETTER WORLD!

Nov. 10th Venue - President Bil Hubal announced that next week we are meeting in Johnny Angels at the usual time.
Rotary Foundation Contributions - Bill Buterbaugh gave a brief update on our 2016-17 Rotary Foundation goals. This year's Rotary Foundation goals are: Annual Giving- $6,200, and PolioPlus - $2,000 . Bill reminded members that of the club match of $50 for the first 30 donations of $100 or more. Bill reinforced the "Every Rotarian Every Year" slogan. Bill encouraged every member to at least make a small $5 or so contribution to meet this goal. Shortly Bill will send a letter to all of the members soliciting Rotary Foundation donations. Our club has a tradition of contributing generously to the Foundation. Bill urged our members to continue this tradition this year by contributing to the Foundation.
Bottle Stopper Challenge - Prez Bill praised Ward Vuillemot for raising more than $1,000 for PolioPlus through his "wine bottle stopper challenge". Ward gives a beautiful handcrafted wine stopper to every member who contributes $50 or more to Polio Plus.
The Program:
Global Health Volunteer Alliance - Bill Conole introduced our speaker Dr Dayarasad Kulkarni [Dr Daya] as a fellow Rotarian & a great medical humanitarian. Dr Daya is the Founding Director of Global Health Volunteer Alliance, AARGY SEVA. Dr Daya's organization promotes healthcare volunteers globally & serves medically marginalized areas. Dr Daya first described how he was drawn to a life of medical service. Dr daya gave many poignant examples of how his organization brought health services to some of the most medically underserved areas in the world. His most moving story was about a beautiful young baby girl with a complex medical condition, who was going blind. Thanks to Dr Daya & his organization, this girl was operated on by a renown eye surgeon. Now instead of a lifetime of blindness this young baby girl has sight. This touching story elicited spontaneous applause. Dr Daya explained how his organization provides state of the art prosthetic limbs & even prosthetic hands. Dr Daya closed with a touching quote from Swami Vivekanande that urges all humans to give of our talents without asking for anything in return. According to the Swami when we freely give our generosity will be returned to us one thousand fold.
