LAST WEEK - Apr 29th, 2021 ... by Mary Membership/Attendance: 53 Active members with 11 attending Guests: Nikki Brown, Exec-Director, Skaneateles Early Childhood Center The Beginnings- President Dave opened the meeting by welcoming our guest Nikki Brown. After the Pledge of Allegiance Bill C. updated us on the Charlie Major Trail cleanup which was done by the Sunrise club and our club. Over a half-ton of debris and mustard weed was cleaned from the trail. Kudos to Rosemary for organizing this event! Dave updated us on the completion of the trail at Baltimore Woods and the placement of the sign acknowledging Rotary's part in the trail. Ward reported that Facebook postings about both of these events yielded record "hits" The Program - Jay introduced our guest speaker, Nikki Brown, Executive Director of the Skaneateles Early Childhood Center. The SECC began in 1978 with its beginnings in a home. Currently the Center is located on Cherry Valley Turnpike. The SECC is a NYS licensed not for profit organization which can care for in excess of 100 children as young as 8 weeks and up to 10 years of age with services ranging from all day care to before and after school programs. The Center bases its programs on play based learning and nature based play. Children are outdoors for part of every day except when the weather is very bad. Nikki spoke about adaptations the Center made due to COVID but also said that there was growth during COVID resulting from community support, creativity in programming. grant writing and the resiliency of the children. This coming Saturday (May 1) is the annual "Spring Work Day" at the Center with grounds being refreshed and equipment being spruced up. The Center is located at 1574 Cherry Valley Turnpike and help between the hours of 8 and noon would be appreciated. Bring your mask and gloves! (see picture above) In Person Meeting The American Legion Pavilion will be the site of our May 13th meeting. Robin is organizing this event.
