Program - Dementia
Club member Dr Umesh Patil presented an interesting overview of dementia & alzheimer’s disease. Umesh is a Professor Emeritus of Urological Surgery in the Upstate Medical University.  Over his lifetime Umesh has had extensive training & experience in surgery & medicine. Umesh is acclaimed by his former medical students & peers for his vast medical knowledge & for his excellent teaching skills. Umesh vividly described what happens to our brains as we age. Umesh stressed  4 key factors that can help us control brain health. They are : 1-Eat well, 2 –Increase mental activity., 3-Increase your level of Social Activities-( Actively participating in a rotary club is a good way to do this). 4-Increase your Physical Activity—Umesh urged everyone to exercise more.  Most of the activities recommended do not require a great deal of time. Umesh briefly reviewed the difference between dementia & alzhemeir’s disease. Umesh described a “Mini-Cog Test that can easily be used for screening for cognitive impairment in older adults. This test can be administered reliably with minimal practice. Umesh’s presentation simulated a lively discussion on this topic among our members.  Umesh generously stayed after the meeting to respond to everyone’s questions.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK
“I used to have this toy, a magic slate. You wrote or drew on it and then, just by pulling up the plastic cover, everything you did disappeared and you could start new. Maybe everyone feels that on New Year’s Eve: They can pull up the magic sheet and rewrite their lives.” ... V.C. Andrews
