The Program: Bill Conole thanked Jack Emmer for inviting our guest speaker, the head coach of the men's lacrosse team at Syracuse University, John Desko to join us. In introducing Coach Desko Bill Conole noted that Coach Desko grew up in nearby Camillus & played Lacrosse for West Genesee High School. Coach Desko & his family spend their summers in Skaneateles & in his own word "seeks every opportunity to spend time in Skaneateles".
Coach Desko opened his presentation by reviewing his high school & college experience as an all star & All American Lacrosse Player. After graduating from SU John served as an assistant lacrosse coach under Hall of Fame Coach Roy Simmons. In 1999 John became the SU's Lacrosse Team's Head Coach. Over the past seventeen years Coach Desko has continued & enhanced SU's well deserved reputation as the nation's premier college lacrosse team. John spoke in detail about the changes that college lacrosse is undergoing. Coach Desko noted that 20 years ago the best high school lacrosse players were located almost exclusively in CNY, Long Island & Baltimore. Today, as a result of it's rapidly growing popularity, lacrosse is being played almost everywhere in the country. Coach Desko saluted Kevin Rice as last year's lacrosse team's most valuable player.. Kevin went to SCHS & played high school lacrosse for Coach Ron Doctor. Coach Desko told many colorful stories about some of Su's famous lacrosse players.
Coach Desko responded to many  detailed questions from members about lacrosse. In closing Bill Conole pointed out that Coach Desko is first & foremost a great role model for the players he coaches.

AN ADDITIONAL $35 MILLION FOR POLIO-FREE WORLD
from .... RI News Release.
Rotary today committed an additional $35 million in grants to support the global effort to end polio, bringing the humanitarian service organization's contribution to $105 million in 2016.
The announcement follows recent reports of three new cases of wild poliovirus in Nigeria: two cases in July, and one in August. The three cases are the first to be detected in Nigeria since July 2014. With these cases, funding for polio eradication is particularly vital as rapid response plans are now in action in Nigeria and surrounding countries to stop the outbreak quickly and prevent its spread. Rotary and its partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) are acting to immunize children in Nigeria and countries in the Lake Chad Basin (Chad, northern Cameroon, southern Niger and the Central African Republic). Nearly one-fourth of the funds Rotary announced today ($8.15 million) will support the emergency response campaigns in this at-risk region, and last month Rotary provided $500,000 to immediately assist with the outbreak response.  CLICK HERE TO READ MORE
