Jim Lanning, President Skaneateles Sunrise Rotary, spoke on the final arrangements for next weekend’s Skaneateles Winterfest 2015. Many of our club members readily volunteered to help pitch in & make this year’s event an outstanding success.
Ward Vuillemot updated the club on the recent “BookLegger” Conference he attended in Houston. The “CNY Books for the World’ operation, developed by Ward, conjunction with Rotarian Books for the World is one of the successful book raising operations in the United States & beyond.
Program-- Kelly Valente, an Honors Student at SUNY Brockport, described how she reinvigorated Brockport’s Rotaract Club. As Rotaract President, Kelly did this by engaging Rotaract members in many worthwhile Rotary programs such as literacy, Polio, & Cultural Exchange activities with students from Latin America, Europe & Asia. Kelly attributes her success in these efforts & in her college studies to the leadership experiences she gained in the Skaneateles High School Interact Club. As a result of her academic & her extra circular achievements, Kelly has been selected to participate in semester for honor students in the world famed Oxford University in England this year. During her Winter Break, Kelly is “interning” in Roberta William’s law firm in Auburn. Truly, Kelly has carried her “Interact/Rotray” spirit with her to College. MEMBERS ATTEND DISTRICT SEMINARS
Last Saturday, four of our club members attended District level seminars in Baldwinsville.
Bill Blessing, Grants Chair and Bill Conole attended the District Grants Seminar, which provided them with the essential information and qualified our club to participate in the 2015-16 District Grants program.
Amy Tormey, Membership Chair, and Ward Vuillemot attended the Membership seminar, which was facilitated by our Zone Membership Coordinator from Williamstown, Pa. There were lots of great discussions, sharing of ideas and excellent suggestions generated on bolstering membership in our Rotary clubs. ... by Ward
International Women’s Day is March 8th, and we are proud to announce that we are holding our first Women’s Day Dinner on March 12th at the Sherwood Inn.
Our guest speaker is Jill. S. Tietjen, P.E., an electrical engineer, author, and “technical expert and authority on trailblazing American women.”Jill is the CEO of The National Women’s Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls and co-author of the bestselling book, “Her Story: A Timeline of the Women Who Changed America.” (CLICK HERE for Jill's bio)

MAN IN IRON LUNG DISCOVERS ROTARY -Paul Alexander contracted polio during a major U.S. outbreak of the disease in the late 1950s, and has lived in an iron lung since. It wasn’t until a business meeting with a club member in Texas last year that he learned about Rotary’s fight to eradicate the disease. PROPOSED MEMBER NOTICE:Mary Popovich, of 2536 E. Lake Rd., Skaneateles, has been proposed for membership by Amy Tormey, and her application has and accepted by the Board of Directors. Mary's classification is "Merchandising". If there are no objections made to the Club Secretary, in writing, within 10 day of this notice, and she has received Rotary Information, Mary will be inducted into our membership on, or following, our meeting of January 29th.
PROPOSING A NEW MEMBER - Building membership in our Rotary club is very important if we are to continue to have healthy and viable service organization. It's necessary that we get our "Ask in Gear", and ASK our friends, neighbors and colleagues to join us in our world of Service Above Self. It is equally important that once we take the first step of bringing them to a meeting, that we understand the process of membership proposal through the induction of the new Rotarian. Outlined below are the steps:
Ask them to join us for a minimum of three meetings to see if they have an interest and would like to make a commitment to Rotary.
If they are interested, fill in the Membership proposal form (a copy can be obtained from Amy Tormey or Bill Blessing, or downloaded from the website, under Site Pages,Joining Rotary)
Present the proposal to the BOD for approval, and once approved then;
the proposed member's name and classification will be posted in the newsletter.
They are to receive Rotary Information from a member of the Membership Committee, and
dues are paid.
Once the above has been completed, they are to be inducted into our membership.
When in question, ask someone on the Membership Committee (Amy Tormey, Ward Vuillemot, Jim McQuiggan, Jean Sardino or Bill Blessing) to give you help. Once we have someone in the membership process, Bill Blessing will shepherd the process so that it does not stall along the way. The new member's sponsor should provide mentoring and support through the initial phase.
