PRESIDENTS' CORNER ... by Pres., Bill Conole
OUR YOUNG GENERATION - In our last two meetings we had programs presented by the “best & the brightest of our young generation. Two weeks ago Patrick Hackler spoke about his experience in Boys State. Patrick is an All State athlete & an excellent student. In the fall Patrick will be entering Yale. On Thursday evening Bodie Centore spoke to us about the great St Baldrick’s Foundation. Bodie noted that he has been raising money for St Baldrick’s for “half my life”. Over the past 6 years Bodie has raised an astounding $80,000 for this cause. Both young men are living the Rotary motto of service above self. These young men are great examples to young men & women of their generation & to all of us.
VALENTINE’S DAY - For the past two weeks Amy, Roberta, Suzette, Mary & I have been looking for an alternative site for our annual Valentine’s Day Party. In spite of our efforts we have, so far, been unable to find a suitable site. My suspicion is that people may be tired of hearing me talk about St Valentine & Abe Lincoln.
DID YOU KNOW how Rotary YE stared?
The Rotary Club of Copenhagen, Denmark initiated the first Rotary exchange in 1927, and the Rotary Club of Nice, France followed suit soon after in 1929. Although exchanges today usually last ten months, the first exchanges took place during school vacations for only a couple of weeks. The year-long Rotary Youth Exchange program was created in 1958 in Lake Placid at a Rotary Governors assembly. Here, many rules and procedures were established that still exist today. The first year-long exchange conducted by Rotary under this new framework involved a student leaving from Scottsbluff, Nebraska to live in Myrtleford, Australia for 10 months, and two Australians from Myrtleford arriving in Grand Lake, Colorado. In the following years more and more countries became involved in the program. In 1962 the first involving Japan and Germany were arranged after tense relations between them and other Rotary International Clubs following World War II. Since its conception 80 years ago, the Rotary Youth Exchange program has expanded rapidly to exchange 9,000 students annually between 80 countries.
LAST WEEK... by Mary Giroux
The Beginnings
Winterfest - President Bill opened the meeting with a reminder about the Winterfest festivities this weekend.
Valentine's Day meeting is still up in the air as restaurants seem to be reserving spots for regular customers.
Visitor's note - Bill read a nice note from last week's Rotarian visitor Terry McCormack.
Rotary Foundation - Keep an eye out for your letter from Bill Buterbaiugh and Bill Conole regarding Foundation Giving, Remember, the first 30 members donating $100 or more will have a Club match of $50 that goes toward Paul Harris points.
Club 200 Winners - Lucky winners this week are Caroline Legg (Chuck O'Neil's better half) and Susie Gaines (friend of Suzette Grinnels).
The Program:
St. Baldrick's Foundation - Bodie Centore and his mom Jeanne were introduced. Bodie attends Onondaga Hill Middle School and is in his eighth year of raising funds for the St. Baldrick's Foundation. St. Baldrick's is a national organization that funds research for the prevention and cure of childhood cancer. Although there is a 90% survival rate for childhood cancers much more needs to be done. Bodie spoke of friends and relatives that have dealt with childhood cancers, some surviving and others not. Since beginning, Bodie has raised over $80,000 for the cause. Bodie speaks at Rotary Clubs, collects bottles and cans and puts out collection jars to raise funds. Bodie's goal for 2019 is $30,000! He and his team of 20 fellow students, the "Bodacious Baldies," participate in the annual head shaving at Kittie Hoynes in Syracuse. This year's event is on March 31st. If you would like to sponsor Bodie his phone number is 315 418-7184 and his email is bodiethebald@gmail.com. To learn more about St. Baldrick's Foundation, CLICK HERE.

200 Club Fundraiser... by Cheryl
It may not be as exciting as cracking eggs or flipping pancakes, but the “200 Club” Raffle is an easy way to raise money to benefit community and youth groups. Here’s how it works: we sell 200 tickets at $20 each for a total of $4,000. We give away $1250 in prizes which leaves us with $2750 to use for worthy causes.
We will sell tickets starting 10/18/18. Two $50 prizes will be drawn at our Club Meetings on 1/3, 1/10, 1/24, 1/31 & 2/7. On 2/7, we will draw a $250 winner, as well as the $500 Grand Prize winner. Also, all weekly winners will be put back into the raffle and be eligible for the Grand Prize!
We need to sell all 200 tickets for this raffle to work as outlined, so please consider selling at least 5 tickets to family, friends, co-workers, etc. – and don’t forget to buy your own! Cheryl will have tickets available at all weekly meetings. If paying by check, please make payable to Skaneateles Rotary Foundation. Be sure the contact information is completed on the ticket and give that portion of the ticket to Cheryl along with ticket money/checks. Thank you and good luck to everyone!
