LAST WEEK... by Mary Giroux
The Beginnings:
Visitors: Mary Giroux opened the meeting with a welcome to our guests: Packy Taylor, our old friend from the American Legion; Thomas Cowden, the 2019 Boy's State attendee; Ed Evans, friend of Craig Froelich's returning after last week's meeting; and Amira, our exchange student from Mexico.
Kid's Books: Ward is asking that members bring any children's books in that are no longer wanted as we need to fill the remainder of a pallet for Books for the World. Thanks to everyone that helped pack books at the Jordan Fall Festival.
"Rotary" is on his way! An 8 week old labrador retriever little boy puppy is arriving at Clear Path for Veterans on October 3rd!!!! He is named in honor of our multi-club grant for 2019-2020. See the article below about the grant presentation on October 9th.
Reminder District Conference on October 19th in Oswego and 2019 & Rotary Leadership Institute Nov 16, at RIT Inn & Conference Center, Henrietta, NY
The Program: John Moran enlightened us with some history about how Boy's State came to be and introduced our good friend Packy Taylor. Packy thanked our club for its strong support of the Boy's State program throughout the year. This year's Boy's State was held at SUNY Morrisville. Young men from across the state spent the week training and setting up a mock government. Packy then introduced Thomas Cowden, a senior at Skaneateles High School, who was this year's attendee. Thomas has aspirations of leading the school's baseball team this year and attending the U.S. Naval Academy when he graduates from high school. Thomas spoke passionately about his Boy's State experience telling us about a typical day and thanked us for making the experience possible.
50-50 was won by Mary Giroux but alas, the Queen still hides.
Guests Packy Taylor from the American Legion, Thomas Cowden the 2019 Boy's State Attendee, Ed Evans, and Amira our exchange student from Mexico

"Rotary" Arrives..... by Mary Giroux
This year our club put together a multi club grant with the Skaneateles Sunrise, Chittenango, Cazenovia, Fulton Noon, Baldwinsville and Dewitt Clubs. Altogether, with a District match, the grant totals $11,000 and will benefit the Clear Path for Veterans puppy development program. This program raises and trains service dogs which are then provided to qualified veterans at no cost to enhance their lives. Clear Path is naming one of their new puppies scheduled to arrive on October 3rd "Rotary" in honor of our grant. "Rotary" is a little boy Labrador retriever pup.
A check presentation for the grant will be made at Clear Path (1223 Salt Springs Road, Chittenango) on Wednesday October 9th during the weekly canteen luncheon for veterans. If you would like to attend please let Mary Giroux (mfgiroux0614@gmail.com) know as Clear Path will be reserving a table for Rotary. We have invited the participating clubs to join us. The schedule at Clear Path for the event is:
11:20 - meet at Clear Path
11:30 - Clear Path will give us a brief tour of their facility
11:50 - 12:30 Canteen Lunch

Dictionary Project 2019 update
This year's State Street School Dictionary project for the 3rd graders is well underway. Bill Huba reports there are 86 3rd graders this year and the Dictionary/Thesaurus books should be in next week. Once the logistics of getting each personalized to the students, letter to the parents and class schedules set, they will be distributed. Many thanks to Bill for organizing this years project.
PolioStopper Presented to RI PresElect Holger Knaac
PDG Ward met and chatted with RIPE Holger Knaac at the Eastern Fellowship Dinner in Rochester this past Monday and presented him with a PolioStopper, which he had heard of and now has one of his very own.
This dinner is an Annual event, which has taken place for the past 94 years, an typically has the RI or RIPE as a keynote speaker. You may want to place it on your Rotary Bucket List for next years. RIPE Holger spoke of membership and the need to reenergized our clubs, and getting back to the tried and true processes for recruitment, selection and bring new members into our clubs. A breath of fresh air in all the dialog of membership growth.
