Speaker: Packy Taylor, American Legion's Boys State
American Legion Boys Stateis among the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruction for U.S. high school students. A participatory program in which students become part of the operation of local, county and state government, Boys State was founded in 1935 to counter the socialism-inspired Young Pioneer Camps. The program was the idea of two Illinois Legionnaires, Hayes Kennedy and Harold Card, who organized the first Boys State at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield. American Legion Auxiliary sponsors a separate but similar program for young women called Girls State.

PRESIDENTS' CORNER... by Pres., Doug Powell
We Are Off to Houston for the New Year
Hello all; This was unexpected. We will be moving to Houston about 1/1/2020. Our son moved to Houston. We visited and love it there. We are informed that he will be called up for active duty and want to be near our son and daughter in law to help them. We are also finding the winters too harsh. So, Cathy and I have put our house on the market and will leave with or without it sold as of New Years. I had hoped to complete my year as president and complete changes to facilitate membership. I am sorry I cannot do so. Thank you for understanding, Doug.
LAST WEEK... by Cheryl Silvestrini
The Beginnings:
BFTW - Cheryl reminded the Club that we are packing books on Sunday, September 22nd, at 5:00 p.m. at the Jordan Fall Festival.
Baltimore Woods - President Doug read thank you notes from Baltimore Woods and the Community Band.
Christmas Fund Raiser - Cheryl informed the Club that the Christmas Fundraiser planning is underway and to contact her if you’d like to be part of the committee.
Constitution - President Doug informed the Club that there is a change to the Constitution regarding make-ups – they are now good for a year. Also RI attendance requirements remain at 50% (meetings & make-up). Ward Vuillemot made a motion to accept the changes to the By-Laws. Cathy Powell seconded the motion. All in favor. Motion passed.
Citizen of the Year - President Doug congratulated Rotarian Dave Lee for his nomination as Citizen of the Year award. Well- deserved!
Rotary Leadership Institute - Bill Conole reminded us that RLI (Rotary Leadership Institute) will be held on 9/28/19 at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill. He said this is a very worthwhile venture. Our club will reimburse the fee to any member who attends, and Ward Vuillemot will give them a handcrafted bottle stopper.
Rotarian Sandra Dupuis - Guest Sandra Dupuis told the Club that in 1989-90 she was an exchange student in Skaneateles. Currently, she travels between Paris and Guadalupe setting up schools for deaf people. She would like her daughter to come to Skaneateles because she had such a wonderful experience. Sandra presented her Club’s flag to President Doug. (read more below)

Exchange Student from 30 years past... by Lori
It has been 30 years since Sandra Bonsirven Dupuis lived in Skaneateles with the Glass family as an exchange student from France. She is now a Rotarian living half the year in France and half in Guadeloupe. And she is the mother to two nearly grown children. Her daughter, Chloe Dupuis, will follow in her footsteps this fall, when she comes to spend a year at Skaneateles High School. She will be sponsored by Nancy Graham who became a great friend to Sandra 30 years ago. She will live with Graham and other families. Sandra visited the Skaneateles Rotary Club to say how much she has appreciated Rotary over the years. (She didn’t come here via the Rotary program, but was embraced by Rotary while she was here … this positive experience led her to become a Rotarian). She plans spend one day teaching all French classes at the high school, she said. She will encourage students to go abroad, as she did with her daughter. The experience, she said, is enlightening, educational, life-altering and unforgettable. Students grow greatly in many ways during a year abroad, she said. and unforgettable. Students grow greatly in many ways during a year abroad, she said.

Did You Know ....
Stretching for 3,237 miles from Boston to Newport, Oregon, U.S. Route 20 is the longest roadin the United States. This beautiful route is packed with panoramic views and exciting attractions for those who love an epic road trip. It takes you through some of the nation's must stunning national parks, such as Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, Yellowstone in Wyoming, and Craters of the Moon National Monument, as it parallels I-90 for most of its length. U.S. 20 has not been converted to a four-lane highway in many areas, making this two-lane adventure the perfect opportunity to slowly meander across the United States.
On the eastern part of the route, you will find quaint and charming towns, providing a real taste of Americana with main streets that have looked the same for decades. In fact, the Massachusetts portion of Route 20 follows the old Boston Post Road used to carry mail between New York City and Boston in the 1600s and 1700s. Route 20 in New York travels through the Finger Lakes Region of the state and winds through remote areas filled with antique shops and charming bed and breakfasts. Likewise on the west coast, you will find enchanting bed and breakfasts throughout the vineyards of Oregon's Willamette Valley. .... and through downtown Skaneateles!
