Another 32 donations and we hit the target of 200 donations. Another round of Facebook and Instagram this evening might put us over the top. We will try another social media push Friday evening. LAST WEEK - Aug 20, 2020... by Mary
Membership/Attendance: - 51 Active members - 17 attending
Guest: Marty Lynn (President SVFD) and Pete Buehler (Chief SVFD).
Pledge of Allegiance - President Dave Lee opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and introduced our guest speakers Marty Lynn (President SVFD) and Pete Buehler (Chief SVFD).
THE PROGRAM - Skaneateles Volunteer Fire Dept. - Marty Lynn thanked the Skaneateles Rotary Clubs for the Fire and Water ribbon recognition/fundraiser. Marty said that it helped not only financially but was a morale booster for the fire department members to be recognized so nicely.
Marty then spoke of the challenges facing the fire department with regard to recruitment, retention and training of new members. Younger people are joining the department but not staying long term. A big issue is housing as the local market is expensive for both renters and buyers. The fire department is proposing that the vacant property on Genesee Street next to the fire department be developed as a residence for firefighters. Both the Village and Town boards support this concept. A long term goal of the fire department is to continue as a volunteer organization, continue with community fundraising efforts to support equipment and other needs, and continue to keep one of the lowest fire tax rates in Onondaga County.
Pete Buehler then spoke of the life safety issues the department faces. Once a call is received a truck must be on the road in 5 minutes. Currently trucks are generally on the road in 2-3 minutes as some members live very close in the Village. A firefighter residence next to the department would help continue this level of response. Time is crucial as fires double every 30 seconds. The SVFD also serves as a backup to SAVES answering emergency medical calls. Again, time is of the essence.
Dave thanked Marty and Pete and asked that we continue to spread the word about the Fire and Water fundraiser. To date $4000 has been raised with 164 donations from the community.
Help Wanted - A discussion was held regarding technology needs for the club. Over the years Ward has been the primary person in developing the club's website, using Clubrunner, maintaining membership records and producing the weekly newsletter. Thank you Ward! Dave is asking that interested club members step up to learn and eventually take over these key functions. As we found out with our Pancake Breakfast fundraiser use of technology has its rewards.
Community Service - Jay Stith reported that the committee met and the following are proposed projects for the club: Baltimore Woods trail development. another highway clean up before the snow falls, a Barrow Art Gallery project. More info to follow.
Future Meetings - Next week Cheryl Matt, District Governor, will visit. On the 24th we will meet at the Legion's pavilion and word has it that Robin and crew are planning something different!
4 Way Test -Jason Armijo led us in the 4 Way Test to close the meeting.
