OPPORTUNITY Knocks .... by Ward
The pandemic has put a crimp into our everyday style of Rotary activities …. but out of necessity it has also created new ways of  interacting and learning more about Rotary and its service activities in our transformed world.  One glaring example are the new and multiple opportunities we now have of attending significant Rotary quorums, conferences and projects from our homes and offices with less travel, expense and more time efficiency.  A few examples detailed in this newsletter are; Virtual District Conference, Rotary Leadership Institute via Zoom, and significant presentations at the recent Zone 28-32 Summit, via online video. .... and did you know they all qualify as make-ups?  So .... When opportunity knocks, open your perspective and let it in.

LAST WEEK - Oct 01, 2020 ... by Mary Giroux
Membership/Attendance:  -Membership/Attendance: 50 Active members-18 attending
Guests: Hilary Fenner, Skaneateles C of C,  Ayhar Boucher, Perspective Mbr.
The Beginnings The meeting opened with the Pledge of Allegiance.  President Dave Lee welcomed our two guests, Ayham Boucher and Hillary Fenner.  Ayham is a friend of Jason's who is interested in becoming a Rotarian saying that he thought Rotary would "strengthen ties to the community."  Hillary is the director of the Chamber of Commerce and our speaker for the evening.
The Announcements The following are updates provided by President Dave:
  • Next week's meeting will feature Gina Stankivitz as the speaker.  Gina, Director of The Barrows, will talk to us about the present and the future of the gallery which is a true gem in our community.
  • Conference - On October 16th and 17th the on line District 7150 Conference will be held.  Members must sign up ahead of time for this important event and members are urged to attend.
  • Fundraising - Jay Stith and his Fundraising Committee are busy at work determining alternatives to our Christmas Basket Dinner which unfortunately will not be held due to COVID restrictions.  More info to follow.
  • PoliPlus Ideas for bringing public awareness to World Polio Day are also in the works.  World Polio Day is fast approaching on October 26th.
  • Trail Project - Watch your inbox for emails about the Baltimore Woods Trail Project being arranged by Dale Drake.  Dale put together the multi club grant for this project that is launching in October.
  • Highway cleanup will be on Saturday, November 7th, weather permitting.  Marv Langley is coordinating this project.
  •  RLI - Rotary Leadership Institute - was held last weekend.  Ward participated as an instructor The next RLI will be held on October 24th in Scranton PA. (see Other Events below) However, you don't even have to leave your couch to attend as it will be virtual.  Also, the club reimburses the $25 fee to attend!
  • Zone 28-32 Summitt - was held on-line last weekend.  Ward spoke of the paniary session which were excellent and promised to supply the links to the video of them, which are in the article below.
  • Dictionaries - for State School 3rd graders was suggested (10th year running for the project). A e-vote is to be run by the BOD for approval.
The Program  Hillary Fenner gave us a great update on the Skaneateles Chamber of Commerce's activities during these last few months.  The Chamber is to be commended for their innovation during these challenging times.  Businesses reopened under NYS Covid rules this spring and reported that business was good this summer as there were lots of visitors from NYS that had never visited our village before.  Hillary urged us to continue supporting our local businesses and reminded us that restaurants may be faced with a decline in business once it turns cold and outdoor dining is not an option.  Consider having a once-a-week "takeout nite" to support them.  The annual Curbstone Festival was held at Baltimore Woods with about 500 attendees.  It was done in a safe manner and was met with enthusiasm.  The Chamber is currently working on the Dickens Festival with a number of adjustments.  The plan is being sent to Onondaga County for review and information will follow.  And, in a sign that Fall is here, the community docks will be pulled out after Columbus day weekend.
The Endings - Each month we all receive our Rotary magazine.  President Dave reminded us that it is a great way to learn what Rotary is doing globally.
Rotary Zone 28-32 Summit (speakers of note) ... by Ward
The Rotary Zone 28-32 Summit was held for the first time on-line, which made it possible for all Rotarian in NE USA & Canada to attend the plenary session via online device.  There were two plenary sessions that I found of particular interest and, as promised at our last meeting, I would provide you with the links to the Video links to the recordings.  They are:
  • Rotary Foundation - presented Thurs., 9/24, featuring:  Jennifer Jones, RI-Trustee, 2019-23, and Micheal McGovern, RI Chair of PolioPlus Committee, and past RI President.  CLICK HERE to view.
  • Create Transformation in Rotary - presented Fri., 9/25, featuring:  Marty Helman, Zone 28-32 Trainer & Valarie Wager, RI-Director 2020-21 (Zone 28-32) ...  CLICK HERE to view.
By the way:  viewing these will qualify you for make-up(s), by letting Ward know you did so (4 way test applies). Such is the new world of virtual Rotary participation. wink
Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI)
October 24th - Register Now ....... by Ward
The Rotary Leadership Institute will be holding their second 2020-21 season’s session on October, 24th via Zoom in Harrisburg, Pa..   The following briefly describes RLI and I have attached a draft copy of the day’s agenda.   Part I is for 1st time attendees, and Parts II & III are for this who have attended the previous Part(s) in the past.  The Graduate course if for those who have completed all three of the Parts.
The cost this year has been reduced significantly to $25 as it via Zoom and a venue with breakfast lunch is not provided (outside of you home or office).   The Skaneateles Rotary Board of directors have passed a resolution to reimburse it’s members the registration fee once the course has be attended.  Many of our members have participated in the past and found RLI very helpful in furthering their Rotary experience and understanding.
You may register now by going to rlinea.org (Click Here), and you can download the student mateials by going to the RLI Files (click here) website.
If you can attend, it will be day well spent in your continued growth in the world of Rotary.
Please contact Ward if you have any questions.
