6th Annual World Polio Day ... from Santa Monica Daily Press
The 6th Annual World Polio Day is October 24, 2018. One of the primary focuses of Rotary International is the eradication of the polio virus. There are three variations of the virus, the few cases of wild poliovirus that we see now are all type 1. The last case of type 2 was in 1999, and the world was certified type 2 free in 2015. The last case of type 3 poliovirus was in 2012. The virus mostly infects children under the age of five because they are the least likely to be fully vaccinated. There is no cure and 1 in 200 polio infections leads to irreversible paralysis. In the past 30 years, the world has gone from 125 polio-endemic countries to only two, a 99.9% worldwide reduction of cases. In 2018 there are only 18 new cases reported in these two countries, Nigeria, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Nigeria is in its second year toward the three years without wild polio virus that are required for a country to be certified polio free. Without the eradication efforts of Rotary International since 1988, 17.4 million currently healthy people would have been paralyzed with polio. (click here to read more)

BEST OF TIMES - “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times”, was how Dickens began his acclaimed novel “The Tale of Two Cities.” Next Wednesday Rotary Clubs around the US & the world are celebrating World Polio Day. Our club will join this celebration on our scheduled meeting date Thursday October 25th. I am old enough to remember the terror infantile paralysis (polio) outbreaks caused in my hometown of Binghamton & in towns & cities throughout the US. In the summer of 1952, a frighteningly large outbreak of Polio struck the US resulting in 3,145 deaths & more than 21,000 young people crippled & paralyzed. In 1955 Dr Jonas Salk developed the first vaccine designed to eliminate polio. In the following year1,800,000 young “Polio Pioneers” were vaccinated in an elaborate trial to test Dr Salk’s vaccine. My sister Bridget participated in the trail & was given a “Polio Pioneer” badge. 30 years ago Rotary, launched Polio Plus to rid the world of polio. Since 1985 Rotary & its partners have helped to reduce the number of polio cases from 300,000 annually to fewer than 22 in 2017. This should make us all proud to be Rotarians. Please join us next Thursday for our club’s World Polio Day (1 day late). Cathy Powell will be our speaker. There will be a special award.

WORLD POLIO DAY - Next week’s our club’s World Polio Day commemoration, with an excellent speaker is a great way to introduce people to our Rotary Club.

Thank You! - Marv Langley read a thank you note from the Crouse Foundation acknowledging our club's support of Polo for Preemies. In addition to the club's contribution members supported the cause by imbibing at the Krebs special cocktail fundraiser.
Christmas Fundraiser - Get Your Tickets! -Amy Tormey has tickets for the Christmas fundraiser which unbelievably is right around the corner. Contact Amy for tables, half tables and single tickets.
The Program - Roosevelt Wright spoke about his experience with the US Navy serving as a public affairs official for the Navy. He also spoke of his work in television, radio and film, serving a number of positions in the communications industry as well as his role at Syracuse University at the Newhouse School.

Summary Notes of Oct., 2018 Meeting... by Mary Giroux
Your Board of Directors met last week and the following is a short summary of discussions points and resolutions. (complete current and past minutes may be viewed on the website - member sign-in is required)
Minutes of the September 2018 board meeting were approved.
The Rotary Foundation giving goal for the club was approved at $5400 and the Polio goal is $2000 at the Aug. 9th meeting. An additional motion was approved, at this meeting to match first 30 members giving $100 from July 1, 2018 forward will with $50 by the Skaneateles Rotary Foundation.
The Christmas fundraiser was discussed. Chery Silvestrini and Marv Langley have graciously agreed to co-chair the event.
Dictionary & Thesaurus - President Bill Conole will be presenting Dictionary & Thesauruses to the third graders at State Street School on Tuesday, October 23.
World polio day was discussed. it is on Wednesday October 24th. Our club will recognize this important day with a program dedicated to polio at the October 25th meeting. Cathy Powell will speak on the subject and Bill Buterbaugh and Chuck O'Neill will kick off the annual giving campaign.
District grant training is on October 30th. Four club members will attend: Cathy and Doug Powell, Umesh Patil and Mary Giroux.
Programs for upcoming meetings were reviewed. Club members are encouraged to participate in program planning.
Membership was discussed with ideas for membership growth. New ideas are welcome.
Pancake breakfast proceeds include an additional amount from sponsorships and Allyn Foundation funds. The board approved holding 2/3 of the amount for future special projects and transferring 1/3 of the amount to the Foundation's endowment fund for growth.
Annual Picnic - President Biill Conole acknowledged Karen Price for organizing the annual club picnic.
"200" Fundraiser - Cheryl Silvestrini has again organized the "200" club fundraiser.

RIFF RAFF - The Mississippi River was the main way of traveling from north to south Riverboats carried passengers and freight but they were expensive so most people used rafts. Everything had the right of way over rafts, which were considered cheap. Click Here for a bottle-stopper. The steering oar on the rafts was called a "riff" and this transposed into riff-raff, meaning low class.
