LAST WEEK - Mar 25th, 2021 ... by Mary Giroux Membership/Attendance: 52 Active members with 17 attending Guests: Judy Gelston, guest speaker The Beginnings The meeting opened with President Dave welcoming our guest speaker Judy Gelston from the Skaneateles Ecumenical Food Pantry. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited followed by a brief power outage resulting in a number of members losing their connection. Andy Stevens updated members on a planned food drive to be held in April. The Program Judy Gelston spoke to us about the mission of the food pantry which she has managed for several years. Due to COVID Judy is assisted only by Sue Eckhardt and between the two they have carried on with services to clients on a no contact basis. All of the donations to the pantry come from the community and are used for the direct benefit of clients as the pantry has very few overhead expenses. Monetary donations are often used to purchased Tops gift cards at a discount so that clients may do their own food shopping. Surplus inventory of certain food pantry items may be given to the Farm Workers organization for their needs. The annual Thanksgiving Turkey Trot which benefits the pantry was held virtually this year. Judy hopes to be able to open the pantry up for clients to come in on July 1st. The Rest of the Meeting - A number of members shared their “Happy Notes” for the week. Jay Stith updated us on upcoming community service projects including Earth Day (April 24th) clean up of the creek, helping the Skaneateles Early Childhood Center spruce up their outdoor area (May 1st), tree planting for the Town (mid May) and roadside cleanup (early June). The Ending, Jay, led us in the Four Way Test! |
