The Program - Kellie Hatton, Training Manager for the Clear Path for Veterans Canine Program introduced us to Ranger, a 15 week old chocolate Labrador Retriever pup who is in training to be a service dog for a veteran. The Clear Path program provides fully trained dogs to qualifying veterans who suffer from post traumatic stress, traumatic brain injury or military sexual trauma. Veterans are not charged for the dogs or training and the dogs are trained specifically to each veteran's needs. Over 80 dogs have graduated from the program since inception. Clear Path receives funding from grants, donors and fundraisers. Puppies are "purpose bred" for traits conducive to service work and actual training begins at 8 weeks of age. Puppies are placed with "Guardians", volunteers who raise and train the puppies with the guidance of Clear Path canine staff until about 18 months of age. Dogs return to Clear Path and the professional trainers take over until the dog is matched and trained with their veteran at approximately 2 years of age. Kellie told us about the canine-human bonding that takes place and the life changing role that these dogs play in the lives of veterans who have been impacted by their time in service. Thanks to Kellie for her informative presentation! A few years ago our club sponsored a multi club grant for the Clear Path canine program. A puppy was named "Rotary" in recognition of that grant. Rotary successfully completed his training and was matched with his veteran. I'm happy to report that Rotary formally graduated from the program this last Saturday, June 4th. Special Note - We enjoyed a perfect summer evening at the Legion. A special "thank you" to Ed Evans who organized our delicious meal and shared his culinary skills in providing us with a delicious dinner. Also, thank you to Craig Froelich who also helped and Bill Buterbaugh who ran the meeting. The Ending - Members recited the Four Way Test |
