PRESIDENTS' CORNER... by Pres., Doug Powell
We can see changes of the fall as we look out on the lake and village. It is the grand time of year when harvests, friends, and family come together to share in the bounty of the region.
We have many upcoming events that are special to Rotarians: The Haunted Hallways, The District Convention, World Polio (eradication) Day, clothing drives, RLI, and others to be determined. If any or all of these appeal to you, go and enjoy!
Cathy and I have decided to do a coat, hat, boots and mittens drive this fall in conjunction with the food bank. We will have more information about this as plans firm up. Why not come up with a project of your own and make the season all the more special? We Rotarians are able and willing to help with any service project that benefits the local or world community.
Mary Giroux introduced the club members to Rotary, the black lab that was supported by a multi-club project. He will be trained and hopefully become a service dog for a needy veteran. The ceremonial check presentation will be next Wednesday at Clear Path for Veterans. All are invited to attend. October 9, 11:30 AM.
Enjoy the season as it unfolds.
LAST WEEK... by Mary Giroux
The beginnings-
Introductions -President Doug opened the meeting by introducing our guests for the evening: Tyler Lorey and Ed Evans, both potential new members, and Desiree Franciamone, Pastor Paula Roulette from Holy Trinity PreSchool and June Vuillemot.
RLI Attendee - Ward announced that a bottle stopper had been awarded to Terry McCormack to recognize his attendance at RLI. Terry reported that it was a great experience.
"Rotary" - Mary Giroux reported that "Rotary" the pup arrived at ClearPath earlier in the day. He is a little black Labrador Retriever bundle of love.
Christmas Fund Raiser - Cheryl Silvestrini announced that there would be a Christmas Dinner committee meeting immediately following our regular meeting.
Citizen of the Year - Bill Conole announced that tickets for the "Citizen of the Year" award dinner on Wednesday October 23rd are available at the Chamber. Our very own Dave Lee is a recipient of the award!!! Please attend if you are able.
The program Bill Conole introduced Desiree Franciamone, Director of Holy Trinity Pre School. Desiree spoke to us about how the first years of experiences are so critical to the development and future of a child. Research substantiates that 90% of critical brain development takes place during these first few years of life. Holy Trinity Pre School is a non-denominational school that strives to provide positive development in the areas of social skills, cooperation with others, teamwork, resilience, self confidence and respect, plus more. Desiree also stressed that children need a safe environment within which to learn life skills and that play is the most valuable teaching tool for young children. Holy Trinity Pre School operates on tuition income as well as donations which are used to fund scholarships for families that may not be able to afford full tuition.

"Rotary" Arrives..... by Mary Giroux
This year our club put together a multi club grant with the Skaneateles Sunrise, Chittenango, Cazenovia, Fulton Noon, Baldwinsville and Dewitt Clubs. Altogether, with a District match, the grant totals $11,000 and will benefit the Clear Path for Veterans puppy development program. This program raises and trains service dogs which are then provided to qualified veterans at no cost to enhance their lives. Clear Path is naming one of their new puppies scheduled to arrive on October 3rd "Rotary" in honor of our grant. "Rotary" is a little boy Labrador retriever pup.
A check presentation for the grant will be made at Clear Path (1223 Salt Springs Road, Chittenango) on Wednesday October 9th during the weekly canteen luncheon for veterans. If you would like to attend please let Mary Giroux (mfgiroux0614@gmail.com) know as Clear Path will be reserving a table for Rotary. We have invited the participating clubs to join us. The schedule at Clear Path for the event is:
11:20 - meet at Clear Path
11:30 - Clear Path will give us a brief tour of their facility
11:50 - 12:30 Canteen Lunch
12:30 - Check presentation
Did You Know - Historical Seneca Turnpike. ... by Ward
The turnpike was originally the Genesee Road which began in the city of Utica and ended in the city of Canandaigua. The road became known as the Seneca Turnpike, which was 157 miles (253 km) long and, at the time, the longest toll road in the state of New York. On April 1, 1800, the privately held Seneca Road Company received a state charter with a capitalization of $110,000. In 1806 the Seneca Road Company began developing a more northerly alternate route to the Seneca Turnpike (Great Genesee Road) through Syracuse. In time this became the more popular route west. The completion of the Erie Canal in 1825 reduced traffic on the turnpikes.
Something to ponder as we whip along at 50+ mph through the beautiful hills and valleys of our little part of this world.
